Jon Jones: If I had to bet money on UFC 196, I would put it on Rafael dos Anjos

“I’m a big fan of McGregor, I’m becoming a huge fan of RDS. Based on RDS’ performances, I think I’m going to go with him. I’m not rooting for either person, but If I had to put my money on someone, I’d put it on RDS … RDA, I’ve been calli…

“I’m a big fan of McGregor, I’m becoming a huge fan of RDS. Based on RDS’ performances, I think I’m going to go with him. I’m not rooting for either person, but If I had to put my money on someone, I’d put it on RDS … RDA, I’ve been calling him RDS. [Donald Cerrone] is my teammate. I watched him prepare and I knew he was super prepared to become a world champion, and the way that fight went just showed me what level RDA is on. So if I had to put money on it, I think I’ll go RDA.”

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light heavyweight champion Jon Jones was just as surprised as the rest of the mixed martial arts (MMA) community when reigning 155-pound kingpin Rafael dos Anjos steamrolled Donald Cerrone — who trains with “Bones” at Jackson-Winkeljohn in Albuquerque, New Mexico — in the main event of UFC on FOX 17 last December in Orlando, Florida. The Brazilian will now welcome Conor McGregor to the lightweight division at UFC 196 on March 5, 2016 in Las Vegas, Nevada, and according to Jones (via Bloody Elbow), the smart bet is on the champion. I guess that means there’s money to be made, according to this.

This Saturday night, the UFC presents the former UFC 196 and now, just the plain old UFC Fight Night. UFC Fight Night: Hendricks vs, Thompson is live on Fox Sports 1 this Saturday, February 6 with a fight time of 10:00 p.m. ET for the main card. As always, Bloody Elbow will have live fight night coverage. To get ready for the show, let’s take a look at the UFC Fight Night odds, courtesy of Bovada.

In the main event, former UFC Welterweight champion Johny Hendricks steps into the cage for just the second time since dropping his title to Robbie Lawler in 2014. He takes on striker Stephen Thompson. As of Wednesday afternoon, here are the odds for this main event:

Johny Hendricks -230
Stephen Thompson +180

As a reminder, this means Hendricks is the favorite and a bet of $230 on him will earn you $100, while a bet of $100 on Thompson will earn you $180. Not as wide a margin as you might expect, given that the former champion is taking on an 11-1 fighter with relatively limited MMA experience.

In the night’s co-main event, Heavyweights Roy Nelson and Jared Rosholt square off. Odds have the veteran Nelson as the slight favorite at -165 to Rosholt’s +135 – a changing of the guard for Heavyweight gatekeeper perhaps?

Wider odds can be found elsewhere on the main card. In the Flyweight clash between former title challenger Joseph Benavidez and former Bellator champion Zach Makovsky, Benavidez is the wide favorite, sitting at -450 to +325 for Makovsky. And Ovince Saint Preux is a big -400 favorite to Rafael Cavalcante at +300.

Two prelim fights are exceptionally close. Derrick Lewis is EVEN against Damian Grabowski at -130, and Artem Lobov is at -125 to -105 for Alex White.

Biggest mismatch on the card (at least according to the odds) goes to Misha Cirkunov vs. Alex Nicholson. The rising Cirkunov is at -900 in this, his second UFC fight, while the debuting Nicholson is at +550. Get all the odds here.

So, Bloody Elbow readers – where will you be placing your money Saturday night?

Jake Shields bails on Jon Fitch title fight following ‘bulls–t little games’ with WSOF

World Series of Fighting (WSOF) was anticipating a bout between Jon Fitch and Jake Shields to crown a new welterweight champion following the departure of Rousimar Palhares, but the latter is opting out of his title shot over a contractual dispute.

A World Series of Fighting (WSOF) card scheduled for April 2016 that was likely to be WSOF 30: “Fitch vs. Shields” now has a completely new main event thanks to a recent contractual dispute.

WSOF tried to put together Jon Fitch vs. Jake Shields for a welterweight fight to crown a new champion, with the previous champion, Rousimar Palhares, being stripped of the belt because of his conduct in the cage against Shields.

As the last man who fought Palhares for the title, Shields was clearly in line for the vacant belt, but WSOF President Ray Sefo was unable to put the fight together after some last minute (and unexpected) re-negotiations.

From Sefo:

“While I thought everyone was on board to make this fight happen, unfortunately Jake Shields has informed us that he does not intend to honor the terms of his existing contract at this time and declined to sign a bout agreement to fight Jon Fitch, so we’ve had to go in a different direction. Fortunately, we found someone on our roster who was willing to step up for this incredible opportunity not only to potentially win a title, but also to face one of MMA’s all-time greats in Jon Fitch.”

That new direction involves WSOF 25 lightweight tournament competitor Joao Zeferino, who initially submitted Brian Foster by heel hook to advance, but was ultimately beaten by Foster in the finals because of injury substitutions.

As for Shields? The former Strikeforce champ tells his side of the story to MMA Fighting:

“They’re playing bullshit little games with me. They basically said they were just going to sit on my contract. It was take the title fight, or no fight at all. I signed the contract I signed of my own free will, I’m not complaining about that, but it’s either take the title fight and get stuck with my old deal if I win, or no other fight. This is happening right when I was about to start my camp.”

Messy.

The city and venue for WSOF 30: “Fitch vs. Zeferino” are to be determined at a later date.

Jon Jones ‘a big fan of McGregor’, but is picking dos Anjos to win at UFC 196

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones is backing Rafael dos Anjos to beat Conor McGregor at next month’s UFC 196.

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones has a highly anticipated rematch vs. Daniel Cormier on the horizon, with an official announcement expected very soon. But before he and DC duke it out again, Conor McGregor will move up to 155 lbs and challenge Rafael dos Anjos for the Brazilian’s UFC lightweight title on March 5th.

Jones was asked by a Brazilian actress, Rainah Andrews, about the RDA/McGregor matchup and who he’s picking to get the win at UFC 196. The question and answer come at the 4:10 mark of the video, which you can watch at the top of the page.

“It’s hard to say,” Jones said. “I’m a big fan of McGregor, I’m becoming a huge fan of RDS. Based on RDS’ performances, I think I’m going to go with him. I’m not rooting for either person, but If I had to put my money on someone, I’d put it on RDS … RDA, I’ve been calling him RDS.”

“[Donald Cerrone] is my teammate. I watched him prepare and I knew he was super prepared to become a world champion, and the way that fight went just showed me what level RDA is on. So if I had to put money on it I think I’ll go RDA.”

So there you have it, “Bones” likes Rafael do Sanjos (RDS) over Conor McGregor. And we’ll find out whether or not he’s correct in about 31 days.

— Cowboy Cerrone (@Cowboycerrone) February 2, 2016

Donald Cerrone’s thrill-seeking lifestyle — which includes exploring caves and climbing tall rocks, among many other things — leaves him open for potential accidents and injuries.

But in life, a drive down the street can leave you open for those same accidents, too. Something “Cowboy” learned the hard way as he rolled his pickup truck on Tuesday in the snowy fields of New Mexico.

Work hard, play harder.

Thankfully, “Cowboy” wasn’t injured, and he managed to make his scheduled training sessions. It’s a good thing, too, as he is scheduled to headline UFC Fight Night 83 on Feb. 21, 2016 against Tim Means.

“Yes everyone, I’m okay,” Cerrone wrote on Instagram. “Rolled truck and still made all my workouts for the day. My truck’s hurt, not me. Have no fear, I will still make my fight.”

I’m sure Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) officials are breathing a sigh of relief, too, because losing two headlining acts in the same month is the last thing anyone wanted to face.

Unheralded UFC welterweight Bryan Barberena unceremoniously put an end to touted prospect Sage Northcutt’s hype train on the main card of last Saturday’s UFC on FOX 18 from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, finishing ‘Super’ Sage with an arm triangle choke that many believe was not fully locked in.

The hate and backlash that Northcutt has received (mainly from the fellow fighters who believe his salary is too high) was brutal and even reaching disgusting, yet the 19-year-old sport karate phenom perhaps didn’t do himself any favors by saying that he was suffering from a serious strep throat virus that, after rearing its ugly head for a third time during fight week, prevented him from breathing from the choke hold in question.

The excuse, whether true or not, hasn’t been met with the warmest response from Barberena, who revealed that Northcutt specifically asked for and was granted a fight with him after his original opponent, lightweight Andrew Holbrook, was forced out due to injury.

This week, Barberena took to social media to discredit Northcutt’s excuses for what is still viewed as a submission loss that lacked the heart necessary to dominate the highest levels of the UFC.
