UFC lightweight Justin Gaethje believes “luck and chance” may have contributed to Leon Edwards’ comeback win over teammate Kamaru Usman at UFC 278.
Last August, Usman was on his way to successfully defending the UFC welterweight title until Edwards scored a head kick knockout in the final minute of the fight. It ended Usman’s three-year run as champion.
Justin Gaethje says Kamaru Usman is a Better Fighter Than Leon Edwards
During an interview with The Schmo, “The Highlight” spoke about his thoughts on Edwards’ last-minute win over Usman. He described Usman’s work ethic and his confidence heading into his third fight against Edwards.
“I mean, he (Usman) whooped his (Edwards’) ass for 23 minutes and 45 seconds. So, he’s the better athlete, he’s the better fighter,” Gaethje said. “Nobody works harder than him. Again, luck and chance are slight factors every time we step in there, but you’ve just gotta trust in the preparation. I guarantee that he will be confident in his preparation.” (h/t MMA News)
Gaethje (23-4) and Usman (20-2) will both be competing on March 18 at UFC 286 at the O2 Arena in London, England. Usman will attempt to regain the UFC welterweight title when he faces Edwards in their trilogy fight. Gaetje will return to the octagon for the first time since UFC 274. He will go head-to-head with No.6 lightweight Rafael Fiziev.

Renato Moicano has won four fights in a row for the first time in his UFC career. Headlining UFC Paris couldn’t have been better for the Brazilian as he put a beating on Benoit Saint-Denis in front of the latter’s home crowd and gave an entertaining post-fight interview yet again. Moicano has emerged as an […]
Moicano has emerged as an anti-hero in the UFC lightweight division. He disses fellow fighters and the crowds but the “Money Moicano” gimmick has sat extremely well with the fans.
Moicano is arguably at his career best in terms of momentum and popularity right now. According to Chael Sonnen, Justin Gaethje is the ideal next opponent for the American Top Team fighter…
Chael Sonnen Explains How Justin Gaethje Could Make Renato Moicano A UFC Star
Sonnen discussed Moicano’s next UFC opponent on his YouTube channel recently. Although the UFC Paris winner called out the likes of Dan Hooker and Paddy Pimblett in his post-fight interview, “The American Gangster” has many reasons to believe that Gaethje is a better matchup.
“Moicano’s next fight is Justin Gaethje. Now, that is exactly what my response would be. For me, that’s like glaringly obvious.”
For starters, Gaethje is coming off a loss but he’s still one of the biggest draws in the promotion. The fight with Moicano gives the former title challenger hope to restart his run while for the Brazilian, it is a great opportunity to make himself known to as many mainstream fans as possible.
“If you got over on Dustin Poirier, you could then do anything. Fight for titles, main events, there’d be no argument that you couldn’t fit nicely into. And, Justin Gaethje brings those same accolades but there’s one difference which is you don’t have to be as careful with the bookings of Gaethje because he is not a in a situation where he’s saying my next one is my final.”
With a win over Gaethje, Moicano will have a name big enough to headline most of his events and even fight for the title. Sonnen’s thought process here isn’t new, to be fair. The UFC usually pits rising stars against veterans to build new names.
This is where Moicano’s age comes in, though. He’s not a prospect and in fact, has been in the UFC for over ten years. At 35, he’s likely on his final title run at lightweight and would want the biggest matchups out there.
According to Sonnen, Gaethje makes more sense than Poirier because “The Diamond” is adamant about retiring after his next fight and he might be hesitant to agree to Moicano who’s yet to become a top draw.
Sonnen also declined Pimblett as a potential opponent for Moicano because they both portray a likable heel personality. Instead of booking them against each other and derailing at least one hype train, the UFC would want to build them both and capitalize on a much bigger fight later on.

Last weekend the UFC made their return to Australia with the country’s greatest-ever fighter, Alexander Volkanovski as the main event. Of course, the event would sell out quickly with many fans missing out on tickets. However, one eager fan tried his luck and attempted (successfully) to sneak in without a ticket.
YouTuber MikeyT created fake photography credentials paired with UFC polo shorts and simply walked passed several security checkpoints, all the way to the cage side. The Australian’s luck didn’t stop there, capturing quite phenomenal footage, managed to walk out with fighters on their way to the cage.
Beginning with heavyweight Justin Tafa, MikeyT then managed to walk tag along with hometown hero, Volkanvovski, as he made his way to the cage to an electric arena. Then, as Makhachev was patted down, the content creator appeared just meters away from the Russian and would enjoy some of the best seats in the house for the fight.
MikeyT reacts to event
At the end of the video, MikeyT reacted to the night, expressing his shock at what had just happened.
“Okay guys so I am still in disbelief at what we have just gone and done,” he said. “I got changed real quick so it didn’t look like I was walking around in the media outfit. I am incredibly lost for words at how that all just played out, I originally thought I would just sneak into the event.
“But the fact how we managed to do all those things, get literally ringside, go backstage and even walk out with the two main event people. That was just incredible.” (H/T Mirror)
Set to make his Octagon bow alongside opponent, Yanal Ashmov at UFC 286 on home soil in March, Dana White’s Contender Series product, Sam Patterson believes his ability to present a new attribute set and style approach to the former, will guide him to a successful bow under the Dana White-led banner.
Patterson, a native of Walford and staple of Team Crossface, looks to improve on his impressive 10-1-1 professional record, having most recently handed Vinicius Cenci a rear-naked choke on Dana White’s Contender Series back in August of last year.
Just 26-years-old, Patterson, who has also competed in the Middle East under the scrutiny of leading promotion, Brave CF, also holds victories over the likes of Jordan Miller, Felipe Silva, Ylies Djiroun, Kamil Magomedov, and a submission victory over Irish kickboxing standout, Cian Cowley.
Sam Patterson touts his attributes as a major factor in his fight with Yanal Ashmov
Set to draw the undefeated 6-0, Ashmov at UFC 286 from The O2 Arena in London, Patterson admitted that while he was unaware of the prospect prior to booking his UFC bow against him, he believes his style and overall attribute chest will help him secure a debut victory next month.
“Nah, I didn’t know who he (Yanal Ashmov) was,” Sam Patterson told LowKick MMA reporter, Frank Bonada during a recent interview. “He’s a tough, durable guy. He’s gonna come with that undefeated confidence, and it’s gonna be a great fight, you know.”
“I believe I’ve faced his attributes and style before,” Sam Patterson continued. “And I don’t believe he’s faced someone with my attributes and style, and I think that’s going to be the [deciding] factor come March 18.”
Predicting a continuation to his impressive rate of finish, Patterson plans to set an early pace on Ashmov before finding a finish before the culmination of their three round preliminary card clash.
“I truly believe, if I go in there and do what I do, I find the finish within fifteen minutes,” Sam Patterson explained. “I think I set the pace high from the get-go, and, yeah, just adapt accordingly from there – that’s what I do really well.”
“A lot of people – if it’s not going there way, (they) start to fade,” Sam Patterson explained. “I set the pace and I adapt to any situation, and I start to take over. And that’s going to be no difference [against Ashmov].”
UFC 286 takes place on March 18. from The O2 Arena in London, England – with an undisputed welterweight title trilogy rubber match between champion, Leon Edwards, and the #1 ranked former champion, Kamaru Usman slated to take main event honors.

UFC lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev reacts to the UFC’s latest rankings update.
Prior to Makhachev and Alexander Volkanovski’s UFC 284 bout, the fight was billed as the promotion No.1 and No.2 pound-for-pound fighters squaring off – with the winner securing the top spot.
Makhachev headed into the fight as a heavy favorite, with many feeling that the 31-year-old size and strength, paired with his elite grappling, would prove too much for the 5’6 Volkanovski who was moving up a weight class. However, while not doing enough in the judge’s eyes, Volkanovski put on a phenomenal performance and at times had the champion in real trouble throughout the fight.
While the No.1 spot was set for the winner, in the latest rankings update Volkanovski remained as the UFC P4P king.
Islam Makhachev reacts
In response to the latest update, Makhachev took to social media to protest the decision – even suggesting that the UFC had a bias against Russian fighters.
“About the rankings, I never expected justice and still don’t”, said Makhachev. “Because we saw the example with other fighters, [Magomed] Ankalaev, Petr Yan. [We] saw the attitude towards us, always. The main thing, I flew 13,000 kilometers there [and] defeated their champion. They raised my hand, and with a raised head, confidently with the belt flew home. (H/T MMANews)
Makhachev is eluding to Ankalaev and Yan’s most recent fights against in which they would lose, decisions which many disagreed with.
While there have been discussions of an immediate rematch, there has been no official announcement on what direction the UFC plans.
Do you think Islam Makhachev should be ranked No.1?
