Tyson Pedro had a less-than-stellar pre-fight experience ahead of UFC 284 this past weekend (Feb. 11, 2023).

The Australian Light Heavyweight hopeful didn’t enter his bout against Modestas Bukauskas at 100 percent and it cost him. Losing a unanimous decision, Pedro has since revealed that he had a fight with gastroenteritis (commonly known as the stomach flu) before entering the Octagon.

“First and foremost, I wanted to thank Modestas,” Pedro said on Instagram. “Game opponent, he took the fight on short notice, and came out on top. I’m not taking anything away from him and I think some people may have thought that’s what I was doing by saying I had health concerns, but that’s not the case at all. He came, he beat me, and that’s the fight game.

“The night before my fight, I contracted gastro,” he continued. “It was extreme diarrhea and vomiting for the whole night. When the UFC bus came, I was still on the toilet ground vomiting and if you want to confirm it, you can ask the USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency) guy who had to sit there watching me s—t nonstop while he was trying to take my piss test (laughs).”

The loss snapped a two-fight winning streak for Pedro, who returned from a four-year layoff in 2022. Had overall circumstances been a bit different, Pedro likely would have pulled out of the fight. Instead, he added that he felt he owed the promotion for finding a late-notice opponent, as well as Bukauskas for stepping up, and the fans who paid for their tickets. Pedro’s daughter, of course, was someone he also didn’t want to let down.

Pedro was originally slated to face Zhang Mingyang until Zhang withdrew from the bout for unknown reasons.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship continues to give us exciting new match bookings week by week, and this one is no different, as The Ultimate Fighter 7 contestant Matt Brown is slated to face The Ultimate Fighter 11 winner Court McGee at UFC Fight Night 225.

UFC Fight Night 225 is to go down on May 13, 2023, live from a to-be-determined venue and location.

As it currently sits, UFC Fight Night 225 has three bouts scheduled thus far.

The first of these match ups was announced about a week ago, a light-heavyweight affair between no. 5 ranked Anthony Smith and no. 7 ranked Johnny Walker. Then the UFC recently added a women’s bantamweight clash between Jessica-Rose Clark and Tainara Lisboa, and now of course Brown versus McGee at 170 lbs.

Matt Brown went 2-1 on his season of The Ultimate Fighter, securing both victories via knockout and only losing to eventual season champion Amir Sadollah, while McGee went 3-1 on the show with two submission victories en route to winning his season.

Both of these men have had a bit of a rocky road along the way, but both have also had incredible success through their careers.

Matt Brown defeated eventual multi-time Bellator welterweight champion Douglas Lima (TKO) before even joining the UFC roster.

Since joining the UFC roster, he became the first man to ever defeat Stephen Thompson (UD), who went on to fight for a UFC championship not once, but twice following, and he also boasts wins over the likes of Mike Swick (KO), Mike Pyle (KO), Erick Silva (TKO), Tim Means (guillotine choke), Diego Sanchez (KO), and Dhiego Lima (KO), which made him 2-0 against the Lima brothers with both victories coming via knockout.

Then we have Court McGee, who came to the UFC with a record of 11-1, only losing to UFC veteran Jeremy Horn in that time.

McGee initially went 5-2 through his first seven octagon appearances, one of those wins coming over future UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker (SD), and one coming over longtime veteran Josh Neer (UD). He also defeated Claudio Silva (UD) recently, who was 5-1 in the UFC at the time of their encounter, and he’s gone 2-1 over his last three.

Who walks away from this welterweight clash the victor, Matt Brown or Court McGee?

Tyson Pedro revealed that he came down with a bad case of Gastroenteritis the night before his UFC 284 appearance.

Tyson Pedro went into his short-notice meeting with Modestas Bukauskas as a significant favorite but failed to secure the victory. Pedro’s relatively flat performance drew the ire of fans, many of which leaned on Tyson Pedro as a sure win on their evening’s betting slips. Taking to Instagram, Tyson Pedro revealed that the night before his scheduled bout at the RAC Arena, he contracted an illness that had him praying to the porcelain god all night long.

“Hey, what’s going on? Just thought I’d do this video now that the dust has settled,” Pedro said. “Well, I wasn’t actually going to do this video because I didn’t think I owed anyone an explanation except to the people that I love. But those people that I love have been getting upset over some of the messages because maybe people don’t know what happened and I’m not gonna lie, some of the messages have been getting to me, but that’s just the way of social media.

“First of all and foremost, I want to thank Modestas (Bukauskas). Game opponent. He took the fight on short notice and came out on top. I’m not taking anything away from him and I think that’s what some people may have thought I was doing by saying that I had health concerns, but that’s not the case at all. He came, he beat me, and that’s the fight game, but the night before my fight, I contracted [Gastroenteritis]. It was extreme diarrhea and vomiting for the whole night. When the UFC bus came, I was still on the toilet ground vomiting. If you want to confirm it, you can ask the USADA guy sitting there watching me sh*t non-stop while he’s trying to take my p*ss.”

Tyson Pedro Never Once Considered Backing Out of His Fight at UFC 284

Despite the illness, Tyson Pedro decided to move forward with the bout as scheduled. In the video clip, he revealed his reasons for doing so, stating that he simply didn’t want to let down anyone, particularly his family, fans, opponent, and employer that all played a role in making the fight happen.

“I still decided to fight for a couple of reasons. One, the UFC had sorted out this fight on late notice so I didn’t want to let them down. Two, Modestas had taken the fight on a week’s notice so I didn’t want to let him down. Three, because I didn’t want to let my daughter down. When you say you’re going to do something, get in there and do it. And four, I didn’t want to let the fans down because I know a lot of them wanted to come see me and watch me fight.

Tyson Pedro also addressed the litany of negative comments he received from quote-unquote fans that were disappointed with his performance on Saturday night.

“There’s a lot of people that have commenting some terrible stuff and I just don’t think that they would have done the same and taken that risk of fighting in front of hundreds of thousands if they were in the same position. I also don’t care about your [parlays]. I lost my win bonus. I lost potential contract renegotiation and I took the risk of getting beaten up knowing I wasn’t 100%, but that was all my choice because I thought I could pull it off. I’m still gonna go back and fight with or without your support, but thank you very much to all those people that did send me kind messages. The ones who back me win or lose. You’re the reason why I fight.”

Reigning UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev defeated current 145-pound titleholder Alexander Volkanovski in their five-round “champ champ” fight atop the UFC 284 pay-per-view (PPV) card last weekend in Perth, Western Australia.

Shortly after the curtain dropped “Down Under,” UFC lightweight Dan Hooker, a friend and teammate of “The Great” featherweight, accused Makhachev of rehydrating with an intravenous line (IV) to help rebound from a “killer weight cut.”

Former UFC title challenger and self-confessed gamer, Chael Sonnen, is not convinced the mystery nurse called into question — and later debunked by Team Makhachev — actually exists, because it would put the Dagestani grappler in a somewhat precarious position.

“Hooker is maintaining he has been told by a medical professional, in this case a nurse, that the nurse administered an IV to Islam after the weigh ins and prior to the fight,” Sonnen told his YouTube subscribers. “If Islam was to have gotten an IV — and that’s a big if, because where’d they do it? Did they put it in this arm? Did they come over the top of [his] hand? It’s a really big one, because people will simply look at you. Islam was on television the next day, it was called ‘the fight.’ We can stop any one of those stills and we could zoom in and he’s either got a mark there or he doesn’t. Real straightforward.”

“If we then had a medical professional, in this case, a nurse, who was coming out and saying, ‘I did it and I will sign here under this sworn testimony’ … in America, we take their license away, quickly,” Sonnen continued. “That would be a HIPAA violation, it would be beyond inappropriate if a nurse did that. In Australia? I don’t know. I would probably think the same thing. If I was to guess, that did not happen. And you’re talking to a cheater, guys. But I brought my own IV. I wasn’t gonna go to a hospital. I wasn’t going to go check in. And I wasn’t going to bring somebody to my room that later could have a Twitter handle and wants to get in the good graces of Dan Hooker and company. So I brought my own guy so nobody every asked me any questions.”

“You’re telling me that a nurse walked into that room, went over to the closet and got out a coat hanger, hung it on the top of the door, as we cheated the guy in the main event in the biggest fight in the history of Perth,” Sonnen concluded. “It’s a lot to believe. It’s a lot to accept. I feel very confident in telling you, said nurse is never going to come out. I also feel confident in telling you that whoever got this information to Dan Hooker — and Dan Hooker believes it to be true — whoever got this information to Dan Hooker is a nut rider trying to gain favor, that’s what I think.”

There’s not much evidence that Makhachev used an IV, which is currently banned under the rules of United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), outside of Hooker’s accusations. Perhaps it’s a sneaky way for “The Hangman” to help expedite this request.
