Manny Pacquiao’s son gets in reps with another all-time boxing great, Canelo Alvarez

If having Manny Pacquiao as a father isn’t a good enough resource, Emmanuel Pacquiao Jr. can also draw from the genius of professional boxing superstar Canelo Alvarez.

Pacquiao Jr. recently got some reps in with Alvarez. Video of the younger Pacquiao, 20, was posted to social media. In one clip, which you can watch below, Pacquiao Jr. works with Alvarez’s coach before the reigning unified super middleweight world champion gets involved.

The 42-year-old “PacMan” has five children: Emmanuel, Mary Divine Grace, Michael, Israel, and Queen Elizabeth.

Pacquiao (62–8–2) officially retired from professional boxing in September after declaring his candidacy in the 2022 Philippine presidential election. He retires with a 3-2 run in his last five fights, beating Keith Thurman, Adrien Broner and Lucas Matthysse, but falling short against Yordenis Ugás and Jeff Horn.

Alvarez (56–1–2) is scheduled to defend the WBA (Super), WBC, WBO, and The Ring super middleweight titles; while challenging for the IBF super middleweight title against Caleb Plant. The fight will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Paradise, Nevada on Sat., Nov. 6.

The MMA drama will be released Nov. 24th on Netflix

Halle Berry’s Bruised has released its first trailer ahead of its November 24 release on Netflix. As promised, the redemption story is centered upon a former UFC star who is now down and out. When her son unexpectedly comes back into her life, she decides to launch a comeback.

While the trailer definitely hits the “down and out” angle pretty hard, the movie poster, also released today, plays up the ferocity of the fighter Berry portrays.

Bruised is Halle Berry’s first directorial effort, and it is also the first feature sold by screenwriter Michelle Rosenfarb. Hollywood is notorious for its mistreatment of writers, and it is both amazing and refreshing that Berry has put Rosenfarb front and center in both the promotional materials and in production.

The initial drafts of the script had the protagonist as a young, Irish American boxer in Boston. Instead of finding a new writer to adjust the script to suit Berry, Berry collaborated with Rosenfarb—and the UFC—to develop the screenplay to feature an older Black woman who is a mixed martial artist living in New York. Rosenfarb and Berry extensively interviewed women fighters in the UFC to gain a better understanding of their underdog heroine.

Produced by Thunder Road Pictures, the company behind the John Wick movies, Bruised figures to benefit from one of the best practical effects teams in the business, with stellar stunt workers. Valentina Schevchenko, who has heaped praise upon Berry’s work in the Octagon, also looks to bring authenticity to the movie. While the first trailer focuses on the drama, it will be interesting to see if the next brings the action promised by the team behind this fight film.

Aspen Ladd believes the UFC must sign dominant PFL star Kayla Harrison in order to bring more “substance” to the lacklustre women’s featherweight division.

Ladd’s planned return to MMA’s biggest stage hasn’t gone to plan in 2021 so far. The #3-ranked women’s bantamweight was initially scheduled to face Macy Chiasson at UFC Vegas 32 in July. Following a late an injury to her opponent, Ladd’s comeback was delayed.

After the matchup was kept together, the pair were set to collide at UFC Vegas 38 earlier this month. In a situation we’ve previously seen in her career, Ladd experienced issues with the weight cut. Despite officially coming in one pound over the limit, the 26-year-old’s state on the scale was enough for the fight to be pulled yet again.

As many had called for, Ladd will now be making the move up to 145 pounds. After Holly Holm withdrew from her scheduled main event bout with Norma Dumont, Ladd has stepped up and will look to secure a meeting with Amanda Nunes in a different weight class than she’d originally planned.

Ahead of her featherweight debut, Ladd spoke with TSN’s Aaron Bronsteter. The Californian admitted that she sees less opportunities for herself at 145 pounds. However, she knows the move is necessary for her career, and is hoping the signing of one star currently outside of the promotion will breathe life into the weight class.

“Well, that’s part of the problem. Yes, it’s the same woman at the top of all heaps, but there’s so many less opportunities to fight at 145 right now. We’ll see in like a year, year and a half, because I highly expect for them to bring Kayla [Harrison] and try to start building the division. But basically, it’s for opportunity. Because I’d like to fight more. And in order to do that, I can’t do ‘35 all that often. It takes a lot of effort, a lot of time, and it’s gotta be exact. ‘45, I can, as you see, take on a 10-day-notice fight.”

When asked if the future of the women’s featherweight division depends on the signing of Harrison, Ladd suggested it would progress the division to more than just Amanda Nunes’ playground.

“Absolutely. They just haven’t put the time or the effort into it. Right now, it’s kinda just here for Amanda, (when) she wants to fight.”

Harrison is scheduled to fight Taylor Guardado in the final of the PFL Women’s Lightweight Tournament on October 27. Following that, Ladd expects the two-time Olympic gold medalist to test herself in the UFC.

“They need stars. They need, basically, more substance. And Kayla’s the obvious answer, and I think they’ve been angling for her for a while. And her last fight in PFL’s coming up, so I fully expect her to be signed and then them to start building the 145 division.”

In recent years, Harrison has been one of the most dominant women in MMA. Since making her debut in 2018, the 31-year-old has built a perfect 11-0 professional record that includes five knockouts and four submissions. Having won the 2019 PFL Women’s Lightweight Championship, Harrison is looking to replicate the $1 million success later this month.

While her future isn’t set in stone, Harrison previously suggested the PFL would have to significantly improve their roster or offer her life-changing money in order to keep her beyond this year. With that in mind, Dana White will likely be licking his lips at the prospect of bringing the Ohio native to the UFC.

Would you like to see Kayla Harrison sign with the UFC at the culmination of this year’s PFL season?

Daniel Cormier Roasts Former Rival Jon Jones for Gym Kickout

Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones will never be friends, but it sounds like Cormier wants Jones to improve his life and change his habits just as bad as anyone.

Just days after Jones was kicked out of Jackson-Wink MMA in Albuquerque, NM, Cormier posted a video to his new YouTube channel relaying his thoughts on what’s going on with Jones and his legal situation. Jones awaits a court date on Oct. 26 in Las Vegas as his recent arrest for battery domestic violence and vehicle tampering charges remains under investigation.

After Las Vegas PD released a report to the public regarding the incident, many around the MMA community were outraged by Jones’ alleged actions, including his former rival Cormier.

“It makes me sad that his daughter said (to) call the police. That’s the thing that saddens you,” Cormier said. “All those little things you’ve got to think that it doesn’t matter who you are, what type of person you are, those things have to really make you look within yourself and make a decision. I think right now is that time.”

“From me to this guy, we’ll never be friends. But human to human, you’ve got to get your sh*t right. And show some remorse.”

Jones is accused of brutally assaulting his longtime fiancee, Jessie Moses, while the two were in Las Vegas just weeks ago for Jones’ UFC Hall of Fame induction. Just hours after the ceremony, officers were called to the Caesars Palace Resort and Casino to respond to reports of a domestic violence incident involving Jones.

Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones had one of the most heated rivalries in UFC history during their fights in the octagon

Since Cormier and Jones went to battle twice in the octagon, the two former champions have gone in completely opposite directions. Cormier has become a prominent voice on UFC broadcasts and in the media, while Jones is still waiting to make his heavyweight debut after almost two years of inactivity.

What is your reaction to Daniel Cormier’s comments about Jon Jones getting kicked out of his gym indefinitely?

Oddsmakers seem to think “The Problem Child” Jake Paul has a small problem in Tommy Fury, betting lines show.

As Jake Paul vs. Tommy Fury inches closer to reality, oddsmakers weigh in on who has the advantage in their boxing match.

Paul vs. Fury is expected to take place later this year, according to Fury’s boxing promoter Frank Warren. Ahead of the expected showdown, Bet Online released their initial odds for Paul (4-0) vs. Fury (9-0). Oddsmakers have Paul as a slight underdog against his more experienced foe. Take a look below.

Jake Paul (+120) (6/5)
Tommy Fury (-150) (2/3)

“At the moment we’re working through the terms, we’re quite close and I’m hoping we can get it over the line,” Warren said earlier this week, per Manchester Evening News. “It’s a great fight for Tommy. It’s a very lucrative fight for him. Financially how can you not turn that down?

“I think he wins it. It’s captured everyone’s imagination, it’s all they were talking about out in the States. Hopefully, we will finish it off this week and we can move forward. It’ll be in late November, December.”

Warren told Sky Sports in a separate interview, “We’re sorting contracts out at the moment.”

Paul and Fury are both coming off wins at Showtime Boxing’s pay-per-view (PPV) event on Aug. 29. Paul defeated former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Welterweight titleholder Tyron Woodley (watch highlights) by split decision. Fury beat Anthony Taylor by unanimous decision.

Ladd disagrees with the notion that she was awarded a main event booking just two weeks after missing weight for her fight at UFC Vegas 38.

Aspen Ladd is setting the record straight. The No. 3 ranked bantamweight contender is moving up in weight to meet Norma Dumont on short notice at UFC Vegas 40 this Saturday night, but it is by no means a reward for what happened to her just a few weeks ago.

Ladd was set to make her return to the Octagon at UFC Vegas 38 against Macy Chiasson, but the fight was canceled after the 26-year-old failed to make weight. She was disappointed that her fight was off and took responsibility for another failed weigh-in, but it would not be long before Ladd was given something else. When Holly Holm was forced out of her fight with Dumont because of an injury, the UFC called and asked if she wanted to step in. Ladd agreed, and she was booked.

The move was met with some criticism as it appeared as though Ladd got such a grand opportunity off of what is considered a serious no-no. Ladd told assembled media on Wednesday that she believes the outcry is a bit misguided in light of the situation she found herself in. The only reason she got the fight with Dumont is that she was ready, plain and simple.

“We were the ones that were ready to take it,” said Ladd. “I mean, you’ve got to use your brain a little bit there — a little bit of deductive reasoning. After the last one, you think they called me first? No, they called other people and it’s a dangerous opponent on short-notice. Nobody else took it. We did, so we get the opportunity.”

The shift from bantamweight to featherweight was expected to be made by Ladd, who revealed that she and her team had discussed it as a possibility for several years now. That discussion combined with the recent offer from the UFC only sped up her decision to go up a weight class, but Ladd made it clear that she would not completely close the door on her original division.

Ladd explained that she would like to compete again at 135 pounds, just as long as she could do it safely. For now, though, she will focus on her first venture at 145 pounds.

“We’ve been planning on going to ’45 as well as ’35, but ’45 the last couple of years, we’ve been talking about it, and the UFC was aware of that,” said Ladd. “Before this last fight, there was talk of doing a ’45 fight instead. It was just trying to get through that last one. Is ’45 the only weight class? No. It’s just going to take me a good long while to do ’35 and do it healthy. But we’ve been talking about doing ’45 for a while. This fight was completely unexpected. They called me on Wednesday.

“As soon as Holly fell out — and I don’t know who they called first,” continued Ladd. “I’m assuming they called other people, but Norma is a dangerous opponent. I didn’t know anything about her. I didn’t know it was five rounds and I didn’t know it was a main event. I just knew that Holly fell out and the fight was at ’45 and it was like, ‘Alright, sweet.’ This feels kind of like fate. Let’s do it.”

Despite not knowing much about Dumont, Ladd got familiar quickly and said she expects quite the welcome from the Brazilian contender.

“Heavy striker. She comes to bang. She throws hard, she throws down and I think this is a potential ‘Fight of the Night.’”
