UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski has a different opinion over Brian Ortega now as opposed to before they filmed The Ultimate Fighter together at the UFC Apex.

Volkanovski and Ortega are opposing coaches for the return of The Ultimate Fighter after a few years away from production. During a recent interview on The Joe Rogan Experience, Volkanovski gave fans some insight into the brewing tension between the champion and top contender in the UFC’s featherweight division.

“To be honest, he doesn’t say much, and I’m a bit over him, to be honest,” Volkanovski said. “I think he’s fake and I don’t believe his shit, he plays a nice guy and I think it’s all bullshit. I don’t think he’s that bad of a guy, maybe I’m just looking for things to hate him for. But it’s not hard to get under his skin. Maybe I’ll use that for our fight, the fact I know how easily he gets triggered.”

Volkanovski and Ortega are expected to fight after this season of the show concludes, which Volkanovski said during his chat with Joe Rogan could be as soon as September. Ortega moved up the ladder in the 145-pound division by defeating “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung by unanimous decision at UFC Fight Island 6. In his first title shot, Ortega lost to then-champion Max Holloway at UFC 231.

Volkanovski has emerged as arguably the best featherweight in all of MMA by earning the title over Max Holloway and defending the belt against “Blessed” for his first title defense. Volkanovski was supposed to face Ortega earlier this year before he suffered from a severe case of COVID-19 that forced the UFC to postpone the matchup.

The two top featherweights appeared to be on good terms, with Ortega even going as far as posting a video message sending well wishes to Volkanovski after the news broke of his positive COVID-19 diagnosis. But that seems to have soured over during their time together for a long period in Las Vegas.

The UFC’s featherweight division is arguably one of the deepest in the promotion, with Volkanovski and Ortega right at the top. Their recently alleged bad blood will only bring more eyes to their championship bout later this year.

What are your early predictions for Alexander Volkanovski vs. Brian Ortega scheduled to take place sometime later this year? What are you most excited to see when The Ultimate Fighter premieres on June 1st?

UFC On The Lookout For McGregor Vs. Poirier Backup

Don’t worry, nothing has happened to Conor McGregor or Dustin Poirier.

Yet.

With the UFC doing another big sold out arena show in Las Vegas for their July 10th UFC 264 event, it only makes sense that they’d want a little something prepared just in case a worst case scenario develops and one of their big headliners drops off the card. You’d think lightweights would be lining up for the job, too … but according to UFC president Dana White he’s having a hard time securing something decent.

“I’m actually looking for someone right now to be the backup on that card,” White told Bleacher Report’s Tom Taylor. “Nobody’s jumping out. Nobody’s kicking down my door.”

White may just be too used to Michael Chandler scooping up every opportunity like this at 155. But now that “Iron Mike” has failed in his quest for UFC gold, he publicly declared he’s looking for a little rest and relaxation before getting back in the hunt. So count him out.

Justin Gaethje would be a sweet replacement fighter, but we have our doubts he’s interested in any role that isn’t a starring role. Last we heard, Gaethje wasn’t too jazzed about being passed over for the vacant UFC lightweight title fight at UFC 262. So chances of him bending over backwards right now to play third banana at UFC 264? Slim to none.

So what do you think, Maniacs? Anyone you’d like to see slip into that backup slot? Or would you rather see what kind of wildcard magic might come at a variety of different weight classes should Conor McGregor once again find himself accepting a last minute replacement?

White: ‘Diego Sanchez can pick up the phone and call me’

Despite what seemed like an acrimonious split from the promotion, UFC boss Dana White wants to make it clear that he’s still there for Diego Sanchez.

When Diego Sanchez exited the UFC it felt like some pretty significant bridges had been burned behind him. Largely the work of his now former trainer and guru Joshua Fabia, Sanchez was involved in confrontations and bizarre situations with UFC staff, the Nevada State Athletic Commission, and even other athletes before his release in late April of this year.

Several weeks after the UFC terminated their contract with the Ultimate Fighter Season 1 winner, Sanchez and Fabia officially parted ways as well—with an attorney representing the fighter making it clear that the former Jackson-Wink talent and the ‘School of Self Awareness’ owner no longer had a business relationship.

It’s in the wake of that news that Dana White has extended an olive branch of sorts. Speaking to MMA Junkie in a recent interview White was adamant that while he has no interest in hearing from or speaking about Joshua Fabia, he’d absolutely welcome a call from Diego Sanchez.

“Diego Sanchez can pick up the phone and call me – any of those ‘TUF (1)’ kids. You know what I mean?” White said. “I had a falling out a few years ago with Josh Koscheck. If Josh Koscheck picked up the phone and called me, I would talk to Josh Koscheck. If any of those kids needed me, all they’ve got to do is pick up the phone and call me.”

“Diego Sanchez, this will always be his house,” he continued. “He will always be a part of the history of this company. As long as I’m here, he’ll always be respected for what he’s done for the UFC and ‘The Ultimate Fighter.’ I don’t really follow any of that sh*t. I don’t really follow any of that sh*t. I don’t really care what anybody says. When I tell you I don’t give a f*ck, I could not be more honest when I tell you I don’t give a f*ck. I love Diego Sanchez. I always will. If Diego needs me, all he needs to do is pick up the phone.”

That’s a very different story than the one the ‘Nightmare’ was telling back in early May, when he took to Instagram saying that Dana White wouldn’t answer his calls and that he had spent the last several weeks visiting the UFC PI in Vegas trying to get a meeting with the UFC boss. Maybe now that Fabia is no longer working as Sanchez’s intermediary, White and Sanchez can talk things over.

Fallon Fox is taking aim at UFC commentator Joe Rogan ahead of an upcoming biopic on her life and career in Mixed Martial Arts.

Fox retired from MMA in 2014 following stints with CFA and KOTC. She recorded a 5-1 record as a professional and is largely regarded as the main voice in the discussion surrounding transgenders competing in athletics.

Fox recently spoke with ET Canada in an interview previewing her upcoming film, and also discussed the social issues that arose from her career in combat sports.

“A lot of prominent people were talking about a bunch of horrible things. The Joe Rogans, the Ronda Rouseys, the Dana Whites of the world,” Fox said when asked about what the experience was like when she came out as transgender. “From what they said about me in the past, I could have just crawled up into a ball and given up. I could have just stopped competing, but I didn’t. I kept competing and I kept talking about this issue and I’m going to continue to do it.”

Fox went on to respond to Rogan specifically, over remarks he’s made on his podcast The Joe Rogan Experience over transgender athletes competing in weight lifting and MMA.

“No, he shouldn’t speak, especially on this issue that’s so important to transgender people and transgender people’s lives,” Fox said. “Just like coronavirus is important to people’s lives. He just brings up these things and just makes them up.”

“I think people should pay attention to what he said, that he’s not an expert. You know, he’s not an expert, so people should take what he says with a grain of salt.”

This isn’t the first time that Fox has taken issue with Rogan’s comments in the past. She recently called for Rogan’s podcast to be canceled by Spotify after he signed a multi-million dollar deal to stream on the platform.

During a podcast episode with comedian Tom Segura, Rogan elaborated on why he thinks male-to-female transgender athletes shouldn’t compete against women.

“This ideology is cult-like,” Rogan said. “The bone structure is so different and the people who deny that are fucking crazy. We want to save people’s feelings, and what’s fascinating in the process is that you go towards the most maligned section of society. Which are transgender people. But women get put into a less-protected part of society than a transgender.”

“”You don’t look at (Fallon Fox) and think she can compete like Claressa Shields and Cris Cyborg. She’s not good. She’s physically way different, she’s a fucking man.”

What are your opinions on Fallon Fox and Joe Rogan’s comments regarding transgender athletes?

FEN MMA returns this week, with FEN 34 going down on Friday, May 28th. The Polish promotion has put together a nine-bout lineup that contains several intriguing matchups, most notably the main and co-main events.

In the main event, light heavyweights Pawe? Tryba?a and ?ukasz Borowski clash in an anticpated rematch. The pair first fought at FEN 31 in a bout that saw both men throwing bombs right from the opening bell.

It was an entertaining affair that came to a halt a minute into the second round after Tryba?a burst Borowski’s left ear with a shot that caused heavy bleeding. It was a frustrating ending to what had been a classic old-fashioned scrap. The demand for a rematch came from both fans and fighters, and thankfully the FEN matchmakers have obliged.

In the co-main event rising European star Jonas Magard makes the first defense of his FEN bantamweight title when he fights SBG‘s Frans Mlambo. Magard captured the vacant belt at FEN 31 when he defeated Polands’s Sebastian Romanowski.

The Danish fighter has an impressive ground game and a gas tank for days, but in Mlambo, he will be facing a different challenge than when he fought Romanowski. The Irish fighter is exceptionally quick on his feet and is a dangerous striker. He has been of Conor McGregor‘s sparring partners and comes into this bout following a recent win at Bellator Milan.

A victory for either Magard or Mlambo will help further establish themselves in the upper echelon of the European MMA scene, so expect both men to be at their best when the cage doors shut.

Undercard bouts

The remaining bouts on the card contain several interesting matchups. France’s Damien Lapilus makes his promotional debut against Poland’s ?ukasz Charzewsk in a lightweight contest. The Pole is riding an eight-fight winning streak, and a win over the French veteran would see him earn his second win over international competition.

Women’s bantamweight prospect Ekaterina Shakalova is also back in action and squares off against Brazil’s Jamila Sandora. The Ukrainian grappler almost stole the show with her win over Izabela Badurek at FEN 33. The 23-year-old landed a stunning-over-the-shoulder bodyslam, which was added immediately to her highlight reels. Sandora will a step up in competition for Shakalova, and she should provide a good yardstick to gauge Shakalova’s current level.

Here is the full lineup for FEN34.  Fans can watch the PPV on FEN TV.

  • Light Heavyweight: Pawe? “Trybson” Tryba?a vs ?ukasz “Boro?” Borowski
  • Bantamweight Title Bout: Jonas Magard vs Frans Mlambo
  • Bantamweight: Lil Masti vs Ada Sledz
  • Welterweight: Szymon Dusza vs Cezary Oleksiejczuk
  • Openweight: Mateusz Mura?ski vs Epic Cheat Meal
  • Bantamweight: Ekaterina Shakalova vs Jamila Sandora
  • Catchweight: Kamil Piórkowski vs Adam Radziszewski
  • Lightweight Bout: ?ukasz Charzewsk vs Damien Lapilus
  • Bantamweight: Paulina Paola vs Wiktoria “tu_viciia” Gnieciak
  • Catchweight: Micha? Piwowarski vs Kacper Miklasz

The former UFC and current Bellator champion sounds off on Dana White’s apparent rejection of a grappling match between her and Miesha Tate.

Cristiane Justino is riding high as the Bellator featherweight champ, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t still looking for other ways to test herself in combat sports. While that has, at times, included talk of a potential move to the boxing ring, at the moment ‘Cyborg’ is looking to take part in some high level submission grappling. Unfortunately for her, however, the shadow that the UFC casts still looms large to limit her aspirations.

In a recent interview with James Lynch, Cyborg talked about a potential Submission Underground grappling match against another former UFC champion, Miesha Tate. A match that apparently fell apart after interference from UFC president Dana White.

“I’m not surprised, you know? I’m not surprised,” Cyborg responded, speaking of White reportedly stopping Tate from participating in the SUG grappling bout. “He’s the one to shut [it] out. He doesn’t want this [to] happen. She wants to have a couple fights more, she says [it’s] not the end of the line, now she can have the opportunity to do this fight in the future. And she said she’d really like to do it but they won’t let her do it. You know the story. Dana wants nothing to do with Cyborg. I’m the one rock inside Dana White’s [shoe]. But I believe in the future maybe the fans would like to watch.”

White’s intervention in a planned boxing match with Georges St-Pierre was also brought into the conversation. The former UFC welterweight and middleweight champion was recently blocked from competing against the ‘Golden Boy’, Oscar De La Hoya, in an exhibition boxing match by the UFC president, despite having retired from the UFC in 2018.

“Yeah, but it’s like… you have to — OK, fighters don’t have forever,” Cyborg said, of White exerting control over UFC fighters. “We have to use every moment of opportunity that we have. Okay, your manager and you decide one thing is good for a career, [the promoter] is supposed to let it go, let them do it. They’re not helping with the fighter. They’re gonna make extra money, extra publicity, extra matches, it’s going to be better. But I don’t know, I’m glad to be free of this. I am free, you know? I don’t have to ask anything from him to do anything.”

Cyborg’s freedom to pursue opportunities outside the Bellator cage is one of the major perks that several high-profile signings have reported as a major reason they chose to fight under the now Showtime-based promotion. Obviously many UFC fighters are still granted permission to participate in grappling competitions—with Carlos Condit & Gillian Robertson competing earlier this month at SUG 23.

With the UFC booking Tate for a high profile return from retirement, however, it seems likely that the UFC is being extra cautious about protecting her from potential injury before July 17th. Considering the UFC’s often volatile history with Cyborg, however, it isn’t all that surprising that the Brazilian may feel the decision is a personal slight.

For now, it seems Cyborg will have to settle with her successful title defense against Leslie Smith. Miesha Tate is scheduled to face Marion Reneau in an upcoming UFC Fight Night event. The July card is set to be headlined by a featherweight fight between Max Holloway and Yair Rodriguez,
