MMA: UFC 262-Oliveira vs Chandler

Another great weekend of action has come and gone with UFC 262 tearing the roof off the Toyota Center last Sat. night (May 15, 2021) in Houston, Texas. Plenty of fighters were left licking their wounds including Tony Ferguson, who suffered his third straight loss after coming up short against Beneil Dariush.

And Ronaldo Souza, who registered his fourth straight defeat after losing via submission for the first time in his career at the hands of Andre Muniz. He also suffered a broken arm thanks to Muniz’s tight armbar (see it again here).

But which fighter is suffering from the worst post-fight hangover, now a few days removed from the show?

Michael Chandler.

After knocking out Dan Hooker in his UFC debut at UFC 257 in January, Chandler was given the chance to become UFC champion in just his second fight inside the Octagon when he was paired up against Charles Oliveira in a Lightweight title fight for the vacant strap.

While some fans may have been hating on the move, others felt it was deserved because Chandler had already established himself as one of the best 155-pound fighters in the world with championship experience.

Unfortunately for the former Bellator MMA champion, his UFC dreams weren’t fulfilled, though he did come close. In the closing moments of round one, Chandler dropped “Do Bronx” and then proceeded to pounce on him with some ground-and-pound, nearly finishing the Brazilian bomber.

Unfortunately for “Iron,” Oliveira survived the onslaught.

Then disaster struck in the opening moments of round two after Oliveira returned the favor and popped him with a left hook, dropping him to the canvas. Unlike Chandler, Oliveira’s ground-and-pound got the job done, forcing the referee on duty to step in and put an end to the bout, giving Oliveira his first ever taste of UFC gold.

For Chandler, his title run stops here for the moment, but his dreams of becoming UFC champion are far from over.

“I’ll be back in the gym this week,” Chandler said post-fight. “I’m not going to be sparring and doing all that stuff but I’ll be back in the gym this week. I’ll be putting in some miles this week. I never take a rest. We’ll see what happens next. We’re going back to the drawing board.

“I will be champion. I will be UFC champion by the time my career is up. I got a taste of it tonight. Fell short. But as I said, every young man falls but every young man gets back up.”

As for what’s next for the hard-hitting wrestler, there are a couple of options for him for his bounce-back fight. He could always face the loser of the upcoming trilogy fight between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier, but for my money I would much rather seem him face off against Justin Gaethje, who is coming off a loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 254.

And even though UFC president Dana White recently stated that Gaethje would “probably” get the winner of Oliveira vs Chandler, we all know White is known for flip flopping. Especially if Poirier or McGregor score a highlight reel win at UFC 264.

Objections?

Derrick Lewis reveals why he hates UFC heavyweight champ Francis Ngannou.

With UFC president Dana White insisting that Derrick Lewis is next in line for a title shot, ‘The Black Beast’ has to find some way to hate Francis Ngannou.

But how?

Lewis joked that Ngannou makes him look ‘fat’ when stood next to him, and that’s all the motivation he needs to put a beating on the UFC heavyweight champion.

“He makes me look fat when I stand next to him so f*ck him,” Lewis joked to reporters at a UFC 262 media conference (h/t BJPenn.com). “F*ck Francis. And eat some Popeyes.”

Lewis, of course, doesn’t actually hate Ngannou but he isn’t exactly friends with ‘The Predator’ either.

“I really don’t like none of the guys that I fight, none of the guys in my division, just because the type of mindset I go into each and every fight,” he said. I don’t want to be friends with none of them. So f*ck them.”

Lewis beat Ngannou in one of the worst fights in UFC history back in 2018, edging a decision win over the latter after throwing just 20 strikes over the course of three rounds. Let’s hope, for all our sakes, we don’t get a repeat performance in the proposed rematch.

Beneil Dariush vented some frustration regarding Tesla on Saturday night.

Beneil Dariush pulled off the most impressive win of his career at UFC 262 last week. Over three rounds he dominated former interim UFC lightweight champion Tony Ferguson and, in the process, likely catapulted himself up the rankings in one of the UFC’s most competitive divisions.

Dariush’s post-fight interview was an odd one. In the center of the cage, opposite Joe Rogan, Dariush first dedicated his victory to Jesus Christ (which is pretty common). Then, Dariush shouted out victims of ‘Marxist ideologies’ and said he understood their pain.

With religion and politics covered, Dariush then turned to technology. After telling Rogan he had someone he wanted to call out, Dariush surprised everyone by name-dropping none other than Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla.

It seems Dariush is one of many on a waiting list for a new Tesla vehicle. And he’s not happy with the wait time.

“Joe, I’m gonna call out your buddy Elon. Elon Musk! Where’s my car, bro? I’ve been waiting six months! I’m having a baby! I need a good car! I gotta protect my daughter! Let’s go Elon! Get me my car!”

In his post-fight press conference Dariush expanded on his comments. “December, I order my [Tesla] car,” Beneil said (ht MMA Mania). “I order the safest car, the best car for my pregnant wife. And I’m still waiting! Elon, bro, what’s the deal man? You told me March, it’s coming up on June. I want my car. Come on bud. Big fan, big fan. But this is disrespect.”

Shortly after Dariush caused some buzz with the call out, he got a response from Musk. Musk wrote on Twitter, “Coming soon. Sorry for the delay!”

It’s unclear if Musk’s message indicated that Dariush’s order will be expedited or whether Musk is telling all awaiting customers that their vehicles will get to them eventually.

It shouldn’t be that much of a surprise that this landed on Musk’s radar. His wife, recording artist Grimes, is a known fan of MMA (especially Invicta FC).

Henry Cejudo has announced he’s set to become a father for the first time.

The former dual-weight UFC champion broke the news that he and his girlfriend, Ana Karolina, are expecting during a recent appearance on Mike Tyson’s Hotboxin podcast.

‘Triple C’ says he has already bent the knee and proposed to his partner who is due to give birth in November.

Cejudo also revealed they are expecting a girl who will be named ‘America’.

“I feel like I’ve done it right,” Cejudo said. “Thirty-four, I’ve made some money. Not the money that I necessarily want, but I have enough money to be like, alright, start to invest and start that next chapter.”  (Transcribed by MMA Fighting)

Cejudo retired from the sport last year after successfully defending his bantamweight title against 135lb legend Dominick Cruz at UFC 249.

The Olympic gold medallist has stayed in the limelight by calling for a fight with featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski, bantamweight titlist, Aljamain Sterling and even boxing legend, Floyd Mayweahter.

Perhaps, with a growing family to feed Cejudo will return to the Octagon sooner rather than later.

Do you think impending fatherhood could convince Henry Cejudo to end his brief retirement from MMA?
