Tweets of the Day: Georges St. Pierre attends UFC 196, return imminent?

Former welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre has made a rare appearance at a UFC event.

Georges St-Pierre hasn’t attended much UFC events since deciding to go on a hiatus from the sport. For some reason, the all-time great has decided to fly to vegas for UFC 196, and it has been leading to much speculation about a possible return at UFC 200.

St-Pierre isn’t one to just pop up randomly for no reason, and naturally this appearance will lead to questions about a comeback.

GSP isn’t the type to come to Vegas to just hang out and watch fights. He played coy and I asked about 200 and McGregor. Very interesting.

The 34-year-old hasn’t competed since 2013. It may be safe to say it is unlikely at this point in time, but a possible bout against McGregor — who has moved up and has been talking about competing for the welterweight title — will surely be a massive fight that will easily sell.

On Friday, Conor McGregor tipped the scales at 168 lbs for his welterweight bout against Nate Diaz at UFC 196. He says he has had a full belly the entire week, and claims to have never felt this good before a fight.

It really shows too. Check below for a before and after photo from McGregor’s last two weigh ins.

McGregor cuts a significant amount of weight to make 145 lbs, and on the left is a photo from his featherweight championship bout against Jose Aldo at UFC 194. On the right is Friday’s UFC 196 weigh in just three months later, where he did not cut weight.

The difference is just crazy, and to me, there are two major takeaways from this. One, this highlights the need for dangerous and drastic cuts should be lessened, if not eliminated, with more fighters hopefully thinking about their health and competing closer to their natural weight. And two, good luck to Frankie and those still waiting for McGregor to drop back down to defend his belt.

Tom Lawlor has been known to have all these crazy gimmicks and outfits during weigh-in day, and UFC 196 was no different. One would think that the Reebok uniform deal could’ve put an end to all that, but Lawlor got creative as he managed to tip the scales dressed as “McLawlor”.

Watch the clip above as Lawlor imitated Conor’s look with cornrows and sticker tattoos, and see how McGregor reacted to it.

McGregor brags about breaking Diaz’s wrist, Alvarez says ‘pussy’ Conor should be fined

Did McGregor’s punch do damage to Nate Diaz’s hand? Either way, Eddie Alvarez says Conor shouldn’t get away with throwing a punch at the UFC 196 press conference.

During the UFC 196 press conference, Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz got in a bit of a scuffle where the Irishman punched Diaz’s fist during the staredown. Nate was seen clutching his hand shortly after, leading to a bit of speculation whether it actually did damage or possibly even broke his hand after the punch.

McGregor, on his part, did brag about hurting Diaz when the two made an appearance at Fox Sports Live.

“The man was afraid to look me dead in the eye, so he put a frame in front of him,” McGregor said. “I quickly snatched it and broke his wrist. The medics are in with him now! His wrist will never be the same! Like his knee, his bum right leg.”

For what his worth, Diaz on his part, denies that his hand is hurt. Although with a massive paycheck on the line, people continue to speculate as Nate likely wouldn’t really want to pull out of the fight either way.

Regardless of the state of Diaz’s hand, many people have chimed in, and lightweight contender Eddie Alvarez are among those who think McGregor shouldn’t get away with throwing a punch before the fight.

@ItsPhoenixJones @kickbackattack he punched his hand and could have easily broke it look at the tape !

Conor should be fined for sneaking an opponent before the actual fight . Not a Nate fan but 20% is owed , Pussy shit @ufc @eafight #Payup

— Edward Alvarez (@Ealvarezfight) March 4, 2016

Im all for a good stare down , even pushing but A punch anywhere before the Ref warns both fighters is Wrong on every level #pussyshit #ufc

— Edward Alvarez (@Ealvarezfight) March 4, 2016

Look if u disagree You prob dont fight or better yet… have a friend fucking left hook you in the hand. See how Feels , then hit me Back

— Edward Alvarez (@Ealvarezfight) March 4, 2016

Personally, I wouldn’t have a problem with a portion of a purse going to the opponent of someone who throws punches during pre-fight media obligations. I agree with Alvarez in a sense that intense and crazy staredowns are fine as it sells fights, but throwing strikes that could put bouts in jeopardy shouldn’t go unpunished.

Either way, here’s to hoping that hand is okay. Diaz already has enough to deal with coming in on extremely short notice against one of the best fighters in the UFC.
