Strikeforce: Houston goes down from the Toyota Center in a few hours, and despite the fact that we have two title fights on the Showtime portion of the card, one thing we don’t have much of is close betting odds.

The way most oddsmakers see it, this will be a night of heavy favorites stampeding toward relatively easy victories. Are they right? Well, they are the ones who do this stuff for a living.

But don’t you worry, there’s at least one good underdog choice in the lineup. There’s also a few guys in for a very bad night. Let’s break it down and see who they are.

Is Jorge Gurgel Finally Ready to Stick to His Game Plan?

HOUSTON – Jorge Gurgel knows what people say about him, and he doesn’t completely disagree. It’s true, he’s one of the best jiu-jitsu fighters to use almost no jiu-jitsu in his fights. And yes, he is prone to completely disregarding his own game plan as soon as the fight starts.

As he put it at Thursday afternoon’s Strikeforce: Houston press conference, “I think fighting is a way of expressing myself. When the cage door shuts, that’s why I’m the worst for throwing my game plan out the window and just, you know, I see red.”

Has it hurt his career? “Absolutely,” Gurgel said. Does that bother him? “Not at all.”

As Gurgel explained to MMA Fighting after Thursday’s presser, “I was very serious when I said that. I do see red. …If I would have tried to get more guys on the ground, maybe I would have won more. It has cost me wins. It has cost me contracts. It has cost me money. But at the same time, how many people do you know who live their dreams every day? I’m still living mine.”

HOUSTON – You can’t exactly say that Friday’s Strikeforce: Houston weigh-ins from the Toyota Center went off without a hitch. Three fighters came in overweight and another didn’t show at all, but at least the Showtime portion of the card remains unaffected.

The strangest part of Friday’s proceedings was that Jorge “Macaco” Patino, who is scheduled to face Andre Galvao on the preliminary portion of the card, did not show up to the weigh-ins at all. A Strikeforce representative told MMA Fighting that Patino was apparently held up by “car trouble,” and it’s still unclear whether the fight will go on at all.

On the televised portion of the card, lightweight K.J. Noons came in at 156 ¼ pounds for the 155-pound bout, but Noons’ opponent, Jorge Gurgel, immediately made it clear that he wasn’t going to force Noons to cut the extra weight.

HOUSTON — Usually when a guy takes three pro fights in less than a month, it means he’s either crazy or in serious debt. Former U.S. Olympic wrestling team captain Daniel Cormier insists he’s neither. He just doesn’t have any time to waste.

“There’s no substitute for experience,” Cormier (4-0) told MMA Fighting. “I don’t have the time that some of these other guys have. I’m 31. I need to progress a little bit quicker than them.”

This is why Cormier, who fought for and won the King of the Cage heavyweight title just last week, signed on to face Jason Riley (9-3) on the undercard of Strikeforce: Houston this weekend. He needs the experience, he said, and if his management thinks it’s a good idea, he’s not about to disagree.

Take the situation with his Strikeforce contract, for instance.

Titles on the Line, But No Hard Feelings at Strikeforce: Houston Press Conference

HOUSTON – If today’s Strikeforce: Houston pre-fight press conference had a theme, that theme was ‘respect.’ It made for a calm, congenial, and somewhat boring atmosphere, but perhaps that’s just what happens when all eight fighters on the televised portion of the card like one another too much.

Even defending Strikeforce light heavyweight champion “King” Mo Lawal, who usually likes some trash talk to go along with his pre-fight press obligations, explained that he just couldn’t work up the same animosity toward new challenger Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante that he had for Gegard Mousasi in his last fight.

“I respect Feijao,” said Lawal. “We’ve trained with some of the same people. He’s never questioned my character like Mousasi did. Mousasi was quick to go on record saying that I’m full of myself and I’m this and I’m that. Me and Feijao, we don’t need to do that. We’ll do that Saturday. We’ll fight Saturday and have fun.”
