Good left hook from Cruz, followed by a stinging two-punch combo. Faber lands a good right that knocks Cruz off-balance, but Cruz seems none the worse for wear. A ‘Let’s go Faber!’ chant erupts inside the MGM Grand. Cruz feints him back with low kick set-ups, but can’t get anything off. Faber reaches for a single-leg, then gives it up and eats a left hook. Kicks coming in bunches now from Cruz, to the legs and the head. Cruz floats inside and pops Faber’s head back with a jab. Faber bulls inside and drops Cruz with a short hook. Cruz recovers quickly and is back on his feet, then puts Faber down with a double-leg moments later, but can’t keep him on his back for long. Cruz feints with low kicks then jacks Faber with a punch combo just before the horn. MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 for Cruz.

Round 3: Cruz dances in with a jab and Faber hooks him back. Faber wings a big right hand and Cruz nearly gets him down with a whizzer. Cruz jabs and then is gone by the time Faber fires off a counter. An uppercut from Cruz pops Faber’s head back. Faber moves in for a body lock but gets shrugged off. Cruz digs for the takedown in the final seconds of the round, but can’t get it. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 for Faber.

Round 4: Cruz gets off a good right hook and a kick to the body to back Faber up. Faber catches him with his feet too close together and smashes a right hand to his cheek. His punches seem to have slowed just a bit. Faber comes in with a right and Cruz ducks under looking for a takedown. He trips Faber to the mat, but Faber pops up as if he’s spring-loaded. The pace slows a bit approaching the final minute. Cruz feints and then lands a nice surprise right. Cruz shoots low but Faber steps out of it. They end clinching against the fence. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 for Faber. But man, these rounds are all very, very close.

Round 5: Faber’s cornerman sends him out for the final round with passionate pleas to go be a champion. They go right to work again, and Cruz tries for a takedown that leads to him briefly taking Faber’s back before they end up back in the clinch. Faber tries a knee and Cruz tosses him off, but nearly gets himself caught in a guillotine looking for Faber’s legs. Faber comes in with a hook and Cruz ducks under for a takedown. He gets it, but as soon as Faber’s back hits the mat he’s on the move and scrambling up. Cruz is just a move or two behind, and can’t hold on to the slippery Faber. Cruz wings a body punch and Faber sticks him with a right hook. Cruz takes a deep breath and Faber tries a kick to the head that misses. Cruz trips him to the mat, but Faber is up in a flash. Another trip takedown for Cruz, and again Faber is up. There’s less than 20 seconds left, and this one is going to come down to the wire. Cruz tries one last shot, but gets stonewalled against the fence. The horn sounds, and Faber immediately sticks his hand in the air to declare himself the winner. Cruz gets to his feet and does the same. Somebody’s going home disappointed. MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 for Cruz.

Round 1:
Both guys start off throwing heavy leather right away. Wiman shoots for a takedown, but Siver defends well. They take turns with leg kicks, then Wiman tries a Superman punch that misses. The crowd applauds their high work rate, and Wiman responds by punching his way in and spinning Siver down for a takedown, though the German is back up quickly. Wiman keeps after that takedown, but Siver won’t give it up. Eventually they work back to the center and Siver goes back to work with kicks. Siver whiffs on a big right hand, but transitions into a successful takedown attempt. Wiman threatens with a kimura, and it’s enough to make Siver stand and let him up. Big combo by Siver just misses. Wiman tries a single-leg, then abandons it. Siver lands some good hooks in the final minute, then tries to roll Wiman into an arm lock and ends up on bottom just before the horn. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 for Siver.

Round 2: Wiman tries for a single-leg off a Siver knee, but again Siver proves tough to put down. Wiman stays after it, drawing the ire of a crowd that has grown accustomed to quick, brutal finishes. Siver tosses Wiman off for a moment, but it’s not so easy to get rid of him. Wiman finally manages to flip him over but almost gets triangled in the ensuing scramble. Wiman working from Siver’s guard now, and somebody is cut, though I can’t tell who from my vantage point. Wiman opens up with elbows from the top, and now it seems like Siver is definitely gushing blood. Wiman gets a warning for trying to find that cut with his own forehead. Wiman hammering Siver from the top now. This is a bloodbath, and getting a good grip is going to be tough for either man. The horn sounds, and Siver is drenched in his own blood due to the cut on his forehead. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 for Wiman.

Round 3: Wiman wastes little time trying to put Siver down again. He shoots for a single-leg off a Siver knee to the body, then again a moment later. Siver defends well and forces Wiman to give up and start over. Siver tosses off a kick to the head that Wiman blocks before giving him a ‘C’mon, son’ kind of look. Spinning back kick from Siver just off the mark. Superman punch from Wiman, who then thinks briefly about a single-leg before giving up on it. Wiman dives for another single-leg moments later, but Siver is stonewalling him and peppering him with short punches. They tie up against the fence and Wiman jumps into an arm-in guillotine. Siver gets out and Wiman tries to transition to an oma plata before getting back to his feet. Wiman catches Siver’s leg and then kicks his free leg out from under him. Siver rolls to top position, then backs up and puts Wiman down with a low kick of his own. The horn sounds to end it, and this is a very tough fight to call. All the blood that Siver poured onto the mat might make the difference in the end. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 for Siver.

Dennis Siver def. Matt Wiman via unanimous decision (29-28 x 3)

Wiman immediately turns and bolts out of the cage, heading for the exit. He’s going the wrong way if he wants to get back to his dressing room, but no one can catch up to him fast enough to tell him.

UFC 132 Undercard Live Blog: Bowles vs. Mizugaki, Simpson vs. Tavares, More

Filed under:

LAS VEGAS — This is the UFC 132 undercard live blog for the four non-televised preliminary bouts in support of tonight’s UFC pay-per-view at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

The bouts are Brian Bowles vs. Takeya Mizugaki, Aaron Simpson vs. Brad Tavares, Anthony Njokuani vs. Andre Winner and Jeff Hougland vs. Donny Walker.

The first bout is scheduled to begin at 6:15p.m. ET.

The live blog is below.

Brian Bowles vs. Takeya Mizugaki

Round 1:

Aaron Simpson vs. Brad Tavares

Round 1:

Anthony Njokuani vs. Andre Winner

Round 1: Both men working their punches from a safe, yet not terribly effective distance early on. A sharp right hook from Njokuani catches Winner flush on the jaw. In Winner’s corner, Paul Daley encourages him to get his counters working. Njokuani tries a spinning back elbow that gets jammed up, but then ducks under a Winner punch and lands a nice right hook counter. Njokuani is just a little sharper with his punches right now. Good right uppercut stings Winner. Njokuani slips a jab and fires a right. Daley tells Winner not to jab at his head anymore. Must be nice for Njokuani to know that. Njokuani nails Winner with a hard shot and Winner wobbles back. Njokuani goes in full attack mode now, hammering him with right hands and brutal knees. Winner is reeling, but still on his feet. Njokuani just brutalizing Winner now. Referee Yves Lavigne taking a hard look at it, but somehow Winner survives the round, though he’s not looking so pretty. MMA Fighting scores it 10-8 for Njokuani.

Round 2: Amazingly, Winner seems to have recovered well in the 60 seconds between rounds. His face still shows signs of the beating, but he’s moving well and his punches still have snap. Njokuani stings him with a hard shot that staggers him, and Winner eats another dose of knees against the cage before managing to turn Njokuani. Back to work in the center of the cage after a referee restart, Winner’s corner implores him to feint and move, but it’s all he can do not to get brutalized by Njokuani at the moment. They end the round with Njokuani looking perhaps a little fatigued from his efforts to finish. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 for Njokuani.

Jeff Hougland vs. Donny Walker

Round 1: Houghland starts us off with some inside leg kicks. Walker comes in with a right hand and Houghland drops under for a takedown. Walker trying to work the high guard, but Houghland stands up out of it and goes to work with punches from the top. Walker tries to tie him up from the bottom, but Houghland smashes him with a hard elbow in close. Houghland stacks Walker against the cage and sinks an arm-in guillotine. He falls back with it, but Walker doesn’t see too concerned. He holds on and Houghland is eventually forced to relinquish it, with Walker now working from the top. Walker forces Houghland’s ankles up over his head, drawing a titter from the crowd, then works for an anaconda choke, but can’t complete it. Houghland does a nice job of scrambling up off the bottom and puts Walker on his back again. Walker tries for a toe hold in the final seconds, but he’s not even close. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 for Houghland.

Round 2: It’s back to a kicking contest to start the second round. Houghland is the busier fighter on the feet, which counts for a lot in the judges’ eyes. Nice right hand by Houghland, followed by one from Walker. They’re both opening up with punches now, and Houghland is cut above his eye, near the bridge of his nose. Walker’s trying to come forward behind his left hook, but his punches seem to have lost a lot of their snap. Houghland tries a front kick and Walker seems to think it caught him in the groin. I’ll take his word for it. After the restart Walker attacks Houghland’s legs with kicks, but Houghland hurts him with a punch and knee and then drops immediately into another guillotine. He must think it’s his ace in the hole, but Walker is hanging out in there just fine. Houghland adjusts and squeezes with everything he’s got in the final ten seconds, but Walker lasts until the horn. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 for Houghland.

Round 3: Walker seems to have a sense of desperation to start the final round. He comes after Houghland hard right off the bat and then stops a Houghland takedown attempt by faceplanting him into the mat. Walker moves for the anaconda again and Houghland goes to his back before locking up an armbar. Walker is in trouble, so he lifts Houghland up and slams his way out. Houghland transitions for a triangle choke, but it’s not there. Walker seems content to survive on top for now, and that prompts a restart by Yamasaki. Houghland goes for another takedown and gets stopped and but on bottom again, but works for the sweep and eventually manages to put Walker on his back. They finish the fight with both men frantically throwing punches and elbows — Houghland from the top and Walker from the bottom — but it’s more light than heat. MMA Fighting scores 10-9 for Walker.

Dominick Cruz and Urijah FaberLAS VEGAS — Don’t be alarmed by that sound you hear when UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz and challenger Urijah Faber end up in the same room together. That’s just two alpha dogs chipping away at each other with every muted comment and every sidelong glance.

Like when Faber says he hasn’t spent much time thinking about Cruz since he submitted him back in 2007, “but he was thinking about me a lot — almost kind of weird.”

Chip, chip, chip.

Or when Faber launches into a lengthy explanation of his viral video effort with musician D.J. Paul in the lead-up to his fight, and Cruz follows it by leaning into the microphone to say simply, “No, I haven’t seen the whack videos.”

Chip, chip, chip.

For Faber, needling Cruz seems more like a pastime than anything else. He does it just for fun, because he can, and sure, also because something in him can’t allow this kid to walk around the UFC belt around his waist and a smirking scowl on his face without tossing off a remark here and there to bring him back down to earth.

But for Cruz, this isn’t a game. As long as Faber is there with that beach bum smile as a living reminder of his one and only loss, it’s not so easy to relax and enjoy life as the champ.

While Faber said he thinks Cruz’s animosity toward him is rooted in jealousy, Cruz, not surprisingly, had his own interpretation.

“That’s just his big head talking again,” he said of Faber. “It’s far from that. It’s more along the lines of, I’ve been a champion for a while now, and right after I win the title it’s questions about losing to Urijah Faber and not questions about how well I did winning my title. I’m ready for those questions to stop and I’m ready to prove that I’m the champion that I am on Saturday night.”

Maybe the worst part about dealing with Faber’s verbal slights is that they’re rarely as direct or even as insulting as the ones you hear in most rivalry fights. He might question whether Cruz is more annoying than dominating, but other than that, his quips are the kind that slip in under a person’s defenses and fester there for years.

That’s why Cruz said he’s still irked by Faber’s remark to him after their first fight four years ago, which he felt was a bit of an unnecessary turn of the knife after it was all over.

“I don’t think I was rubbing it in,” Faber said. “I was just kind of like, ‘Good fight. Try again, buddy.’ …But he knows what I meant. He was right.”

Not mean or derisive, exactly. But not nice, either. That’s Faber’s style when it comes to his rivals. Cruz takes the more direct path, or else simmers in silence as he glares a hole in “The California Kid” from across the room.

Even though he’s the champ, it’s not hard to see that Cruz needs this fight more than Faber. He’s the one still trying to carve his name into MMA history. Faber’s already been there and done that. He could retire tomorrow and be remembered as a pioneer of the lighter weight classes.

But then, he’s not one to miss out on such a golden chance to tweak a rival’s ego, or smash his face.

“The cool thing about this fight, the reason it’s a grudge match and all that, is you put Dominick and I in the same little neighborhood and we probably would have ended up fighting each other,” Faber explained. “His bad attitude and me not taking crap, and me being the badder man, that’s what this is about. Like-minded people, we’re going to butt heads when it comes to the fight game and see who’s boss.”

And on and on it goes — chip, chip, chipping away — until they finally wind up in the same cage together again. Then it will be time to put away the chisels and go to work with the hammers.
