The bitter rivalry between former friends Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal will finally spill over into the Octagon later tonight (Sat., Mar. 5, 2022) at UFC 272 live on ESPN+ PPV from inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

There was a time when Covington and Masvidal used to be best of friends. They’d train together, live together, and use one another to better their mixed martial arts (MMA) games. It seemed like “Chaos” and “Gamebred” were going to take Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) by storm and create a partnership that was going to last years.

However, a divide was created at their gym, American Top Team (ATT), and Covington and Masvidal saw their friendship quickly go up in flames. “Chaos” did little to help the situation by talking trash every opportunity he got, but it’s not like Masvidal did anything either to prevent the relationship from crashing. The divide grew larger, Covington left ATT, and the rest is history.

Years later the two welterweight contenders find themselves on the cusp of one of the biggest grudge matches in the history of UFC. The Octagon has played host to a long list of bitter rivalries and high-profile rematches and trilogies, but never something like this. Covington and Masvidal were practically brothers and now they’re just hours away from trying to kill each other live on PPV.

In advance to UFC 272, the promotion has released the official ‘Cold Open’ video, which can be seen in the above player. Narrated by the Hollywood actor Ron Perlman, the video provides an in-depth look at the history shared between Covington and Masvidal and how everything has led them to tonight’s PPV headliner.

It is unknown at this time if Covington and Masvidal have what it takes to bury the hatchet after their grudge match, but you better believe they’re coming for blood in the main event.

Colby Covington is entering his grudge match with Jorge Masvidal with supreme confidence and it’s showed all week.

The two former friends turned rivals will finally collide in a five-round main event later this evening (Sat., Mar. 5, 2022) at UFC 272 live on ESPN+ PPV from inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. It will be a matchup years in the making considering Covington and Masvidal have been trying to get their hands on each other ever since the fallout at American Top Team.

Having spent so much time together the bad blood in this matchup seems as real as the Octagon they’ll be fighting in. Both Covington and Masvidal have said some pretty damaging things over the years, but “Chaos” always seems to push it to the next level when a microphone is in his hand. Covington had one final chance to deliver a message to “Gamebred” during UFC 272’s ceremonial weigh ins and he took full advantage.

“Tonight is the Street Judas’ last supper,” Covington said. “Tomorrow, I’m sending him to the electric chair, I’m gonna flip the switch, fry his bum ass and electrify the T-Mobile Arena like it’s never been electrified before.”

Covington, who is coming off his second title fight loss to current UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman, believes he’ll be too much for Masvidal to handle when the cage door shuts on Saturday night. With one of the best wrestling attacks and gas tanks in the game it’s easy to see why “Chaos” is so confident against a striker like “Gamebred.”

However, Masvidal commands a similar level of confidence heading into UFC 272 as well. “Gamebred” has produced some of the more memorable knockouts in UFC history and he believes he can create another highlight-reel moment against his former teammate. Masvidal delivered his own sendoff message to Covington at UFC 272’s ceremonial weigh ins.

“This guy is a b—ch and I can’t wait to prove it tomorrow,” Masvidal said. “D—k sniffing ass b—ch.

“Hey, Colby, keep selling that pay-per-view. Sell that pay-per-view, boy. Look at me while I’m talking to you, b—ch. Sell that pay-per-view. You talk all that s—t so they can buy that pay-per-view, b—ch, which you ain’t getting none of.”

There is only one way to find out which welterweight contender lives up to their billing later tonight at UFC 272. Who do you see coming out on top in the main event between Covington and Masvidal?

Usman Predicts Covington Vs. Masvidal Grudge Match

The upcoming grudge match between Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal will draw much attention later tonight (Sat., Mar. 5, 2022) at UFC 272 live on ESPN+ PPV from inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, including that of current UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman.

While fight fans are chomping at the bit to see Covington and Masvidal finally settle their rivalry inside of the Octagon Usman has a little more interest than most. That’s because the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world has defeated both “Chaos” and “Gamebred” twice each. In fact, Usman is the only fighter to defeat Covington and Masvidal over the past five years.

Having prepared multiple training camps for each fighter Usman has inside knowledge of what Covington and Masvidal might bring to the table at UFC 272. One of the biggest questions heading into tonight’s main event is if Masvidal has the ability to stop Covington. Usman’s experience inside of the cage with both men leads him to believe “Gamebred” has the chance of stopping Covington and making him quit.

“Absolutely,” said Usman during a Q&A before UFC 272’s ceremonial weigh ins. “If you look back after the third round [in our first fight at UFC 245] when I cracked his jaw, he went back to his corner and told them, ‘My jaw is broken.’ He wanted a way out. Hey, he might have toughed it out and cleaned it up, and he’s no longer that guy, but I think everybody has a price. If Masvidal can do enough damage, I think Colby will make that deal with himself to be able to quit.”

While Usman believes Masvidal can do enough damage to stop this fight early the UFC champion also believes Covington’s cardio can become a big factor down the stretch. “Chaos” is known for his high-pace motor and ability to grind away an opponent for 25-straight minutes so Masvidal needs to stay on his feet and keep his own conditioning in check if he wants to survive some of the later rounds.

“It don’t look good for Masvidal [if this fight gets extended],” Usman said. “I’m just being honest. If it goes to the later rounds, that means Colby has found a way to keep the fight going as long as he can, so I don’t think that favors Masvidal.

“I don’t think he’s gonna be able to hold [Masvidal] down, maybe not until the later rounds, but that works good for Colby because he doesn’t necessarily want to hold guys down. He just wants to be able to drag him down so they have to work to get back up, then drag them back down. What’s really going to make the difference in this fight is Masvidal’s ability to not get tired. But Covington has more ways to win.”

Masvidal may have a chance to pull out a spectacular finish but Covington is coming into this fight a 3-1 favorite. It’s hard to envision a scenario in which Covington isn’t able to pressure “Gamebred” with his wrestling and tire him out down the stretch, but Usman sees a window of opportunity for Masvidal as long as he follows a strict gameplan.

“I think Jorge just got to press him,” Usman explained. “Jorge’s wrestling defense is much better than I thought because he stands straight up in that stance, bounces up and down, and you think it’s easy to take him down but it was tougher than I thought. He’s got to press Covington and you’ve got to make him remember all them times he slept on your couch, eating those $2 McDonald’s burgers, you’ve got to make him remember that.”
