On a night that features a main event clash between red-hot bantamweight contender Rob Font and former UFC featherweight king Jose Aldo, a co-headliner involving lightweight strikers Brad Riddell and Rafael Fiziev, and a light heavyweight scrap featuring young contenders Jimmy Crute and Jamahal Hill, there will be a lot to discuss when the action winds down.

Clay Guida survived an early scare to earn a huge comeback finish earlier tonight (Sat., Dec. 4, 2021) at UFC Vegas 44 live on ESPN/ESPN+ from inside UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada, when the lightweight veteran stopped Brazilian fighter Leonardo Santos with a second-round submission (rear-naked choke).

Santos is a fast starter and he wasted little time attacking Guida. A piercing front kick by Santos stuck Guida in the stomach and “The Carpenter” covered up in pain. Santos pursued with punches and knees and nearly put Guida out. Guida somehow survived and actually ended up in top control to end the first round.

In the second, Santos was gassed and Guida quickly moved in for the kill. After taking Santos’ back Guida was able to lock up the rear-naked choke and put the squeeze on an exhausted Santos, who eventually tapped.

Chris Curtis delivered another upset win earlier tonight (Sat., Dec. 4, 2021) at UFC Vegas 44 live on ESPN/ESPN+ from inside UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada, when “Action Man” finished middleweight contender Brendan Allen via second-round TKO (punches and knees).

Curtis and Allen went toe-to-toe in the first as both landed hard strikes on the feet. Allen mixed in some ground work along the way, but Curtis wasn’t going anywhere. The two middleweights continued their battle into the second which is when Curtis landed a hard body shot followed by a short right hook that badly wobbled Allen. Curtis rushed in and unloaded punches and knees along the cage to get the eventual finish.

Curtis, 34, captured an improbable win in his UFC debut just one month ago when he stopped Phil Hawes with a first-round knockout. To come in less than 30 days later and take out Allen in this fashion is pretty damn impressive. Don’t be surprised if “Acton Man” is fighting for a top 15 spot in the UFC’s middleweight division his next time out.

Dusko Todorovic earned a much needed win earlier tonight (Sat., Dec. 4, 2021) at UFC Vegas 44 live on ESPN/ESPN+ from inside UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada, when the Serbian put an end to Maki Pitolo with a first-round TKO (punches).

After a brief feeling out period on the feet Pitolo decided to pull guard in effort to lock in a guillotine choke. It was tight, but Todorovic stayed calm and eventually wiggled free. From there, Todorovic was able to ground-and-pound Pitolo and take his back, which allowed “Thunder” to unload hard punches until the referee had seen enough.

Todorovic, who made his UFC debut with an undefeated 9-0 record, was coming off back-to-back losses to Punahele Soriano and Gregory Rodrigues earlier this year. This was an important win for the 27-year-old light heavyweight and a reminder that he’s still a very dangerous fighter.

Claudio Puelles pushed his UFC win streak to four earlier tonight (Sat., Dec. 4, 2021) at UFC Vegas 44 live on ESPN/ESPN+ from inside UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada, when the Peruvian prospect stopped lightweight veteran Chris Gruetzemacher via third-round submission (kneebar).

This fight was pretty one-sided from the opening bell as Puelles used his speed and versatility on the feet to batter Gruetzemacher before taking him down and landing some good ground-and-pound. Gruetzemacher returned the favor with a small moment of top control in the second, but it wasn’t enough to turn the tides. The action hit the canvas again in the third and that’s when Puelles grabbed a hold of Gruetzemacher’s leg and locked in the submission finish.

Puelles, who is now 4-1 since making his UFC debut back in 2016, is a very talented fighter at 155 pounds and certainly a name to watch heading into 2022. However, the 25-year-old prospect needs to clean up a few things, especially his takedown attempts, if he wants to work his way towards the division’s top 15.

Vince Morales claimed the biggest victory of his MMA career thus far with a first-round knockout stoppage over Louis Smolka earlier tonight (Sat., Dec. 4, 2021) at UFC Vegas 44 live on ESPN/ESPN+ from inside UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Smolka tried to find his range early but Morales was too active. He landed crisp jabs and combinations to the body that quickly put Smolka on notice. As Smolka started to move in for some of his own offense Morales countered with a power right and put “Da Last Samurai” down. Morales followed suit with a few insurance shots as Smolka covered up and the referee stepped in.

Morales, 31, has now won back-to-back fights after edging out Drako Rodriguez via decision this past August. The talented bantamweight is now 3-3 as a member of the UFC roster and will look to break through in a jam-packed division entering 2022. This performance was certainly a momentum-builder for “Vandetta.”
