Kevin Holland has a real good reason why he moved down to the welterweight division and it shouldn’t come as a surprise.

The former middleweight contender will now start making the cut down to 170 pounds for his next UFC appearance. As one of the more outspoken fighters on the UFC roster today Holland has not been shy in explaining his decision to drop down in weight. The man known as “Big Mouth” has comfortably hit the 185-pound mark in the past so fighting one weight class down should not hinder him too much.

Holland, who fought a bunch of times at 170 pounds prior to his UFC career, produced a 8-4 (1 NC) record in the middleweight division since his promotional debut in 2018. The 29-year-old hit a bit of a rough patch earlier this year with back-to-back losses against Derek Brunson and Marvin Vettori. Those fights proved that Holland wasn’t necessarily strong enough to keep up with some of the best grapplers in the middleweight division.

“I had that time off after the two losses back-to-back and I bought a bunch of weights and stuff like that,” Holland explained when speaking to MMA Fighting. “I got a bad ass weight set for the house. Doing a bunch of lifting. Every time I’d go out of town, I’d book a hotel with the best lifting spots. I’d lift and I was getting into the lifting lifestyle. I’m going to be like Jon Jones, you know what I mean? Big!

“It just didn’t work out. Could never gain the weight. The more I lifted, the more I eat, the more I sh*t.”

After his debut loss to Thiago Santos over three years ago Holland went on to win eight of his next nine Octagon appearances, which culminated with a knockout win over legendary fighter Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza. It wasn’t until “Trailblazer” encountered the likes of Brunson and Vettori that he realized the tops guys know how to use their weight a little better than most.

“It never really made a difference but when you get to the top 10, top 15, those guys just know how to use their weight a little better,” Holland said. “They like to make love inside the octagon. So you have to watch those types of things.

“So I prefer my women a certain size when I’m making love so I’ve got to make sure men are a certain size, too. Just make love making a little bit easier.”

With a move to welterweight Holland believes he won’t have the same issues against wrestlers looking to take him down. He believes that his wrestling defense was getting a little better at middleweight so if it was applied to 170-pound competition he shouldn’t have an issue staying on his feet and showing off his dangerous striking.

“Make no mistake about it, I’m getting humped by these huge ass guys at 185,” Holland said. “They’re not doing no damage, they’re just laying on top of me. I go down 170 pounds, if I can get up from these guys who are pretty good wrestlers at 85, I know for sure what I can do at 170.

“The toughest fights at 70 would probably be a Leon Edwards, [Kamaru] Usman and [Khamzat] Chimaev. Other than that, everybody else is [getting] dog walked. I’m running these fools over. I don’t care if they’ve got an undefeated record or not. I’m going to show them who the big man is at 170. Once I get done with that, once I get a title, I can go up to 185 and fight the champ [Israel Adesanya]. I’m tired of fighting all these humpers anyways. That’s the only striker left around here that’s anywhere near my weight class.”

Considering Holland came in light for some of his middleweight bouts it shouldn’t take him too much time to break his body down for a move to welterweight. In fact, “Big Mouth” already has a fighter in mind for his first UFC appearance at 170 pounds. It would come in the form of streaking contender Daniel Rodriguez, who is coming off a masterful performance against the recently released Kevin Lee.

“I’m looking at the guys in the top 15 and I like every single one of them,” Holland said. “D-Rod (Daniel Rodriguez) is a very, very fun fight coming down. Very, very fun fight. I’ve got a lot of respect for the way D-Rod fights. I’ve got a lot of respect for the way D-Rod gets down on a day to day basis. It’s a fun fight and a fun fight is a fun fight. The guy that Chimaev just fought [Li] Jingliang, I’d like to fight him. I think he wanted to go out there and bang a little bit and he didn’t get that opportunity. I’ll give him that opportunity. Matt Brown didn’t get his fight, he needs somebody but he’s not top 15 — he’s just a legend. It’s like who wouldn’t want to go against an immortal? That would be amazing.

“You name them, you pick them, I’m with it. I don’t really care who it is. Anybody who wants it.”

Despite his move down to welterweight, Holland is still open to returning to 185 pounds if his services are needed. The former contender has always been a company man so if someone falls out and he needs to move back up it’s a scenario worth visiting.

“I still don’t mind fighting the big boys,” Holland said. “I have to go make my claim at 170 and prove I can do it, so on and so forth, go on a five-fight win streak there but make no mistake about it, somebody catches a cramp in their vaginal muscles right before a fight, I’ll swoop in. I can still save the day.

“Big mouth is at 185 [pounds], Trailblazer’s at 170. Kevin Holland’s for the bedroom. I’ve got it all together.”

The bad blood between Team Fury and Jake Paul continues to boil heading into Paul’s boxing match with Tommy Fury later this month.

While Paul seems to make enemies with just about anyone he fights the tension between the social media star and the Fury family is evolving to another level. The pre-fight press conference last week was so intense that BT Sport needed to issue an apology afterwards for the language used, mostly due to the outbursts by Tommy Fury’s father, John Fury.

The elder Fury is taking serious offense to almost everything that Paul is saying and is not one to shy away from a confrontation. Big brother, Tyson Fury, is also getting involved, but he has his own boxing future to worry about and has already made it known that he will backhand the Paul brothers if they continue to disrespect him.

In a recent interview, John Fury issued another fiery message to Paul and warned him to keep his distance if they ever meet in person. The former professional boxer and bare-knuckle fighter did not mince words when telling Paul what he would do to him.

“Listen, I’m a horrible man, so touché. It’s a pity I can’t get to America, because believe me. I’ll say one thing – if people think I’m a loudmouth, and this that and the other, invade my space, and I will drop them where they stand,” said Fury during a recent interview (via BJPenn.com). “It doesn’t matter who they are. Jake Paul, anybody who tries to disrespect me and my family is getting it there and then. No backwards steps at all, none off me at all. I will back up what I say. If somebody comes as close to me as you are, we’re fighting. Don’t disrespect my family.”

All of the fierce trash talk will be put to rest when Paul and Tommy Fury collide in a main event boxing match on Dec. 18 live on Showtime pay-per-view (PPV). Both fighters will be competing to maintain their undefeated professional records and also to win ultimate bragging rights. Let’s just hope John Fury doesn’t get his hands on Paul before Tommy Fury does.

Conor McGregor is once again on the road to redemption and he’s apparently “chomping at the bit” to get back inside of the Octagon.

This is according to UFC president Dana White, who tries to keep in touch with his biggest PPV cash cow as much as possible. McGregor has been recovering from a serious leg injury suffered at UFC 264 this past July and nobody really knows when he’ll return to action. “Notorious” does seem to be moving along nicely with his rehab and is currently eyeing a return to sparring this April.

“He’s chomping at the bit to get back in there and compete again,” White said earlier this week during an appearance on “The Jim Rome Podcast.” “It’s going to be a while before he can put some torque on that leg. April. For him to start training again in April is probably about right.”

McGregor, who is hands down the most well-known fighter in the sport today, doesn’t need to return to fighting if he doesn’t want to. The former two-division champion is a millionaire for life and wouldn’t be looked at any differently if he walked away after suffering a brutal leg injury just a few months ago.

That said, McGregor isn’t giving up anytime soon as he still believes he’s the best fighter on the planet. Even after losing three out of his last four trips to the Octagon the Irish sensation is as focused as ever to return to the mix and try to win UFC gold once again.

“I don’t know (how badly he wants it),” White said. “He obviously still has the desire to compete. You don’t ever hear Conor going, ‘You know what, man? I just don’t have the desire for this anymore.’ You now what I mean? He’s obviously very rich, and he’s training like Rocky in ‘Rocky III,’ but he still has the desire to compete and the desire to fight, and we’ll see what happens.”

While it’s unlikely that McGregor gets the immediate lightweight title shot that he’s calling for he does have a wide collection of opponents that could welcome him back into the cage. This includes top lightweight contender Dustin Poirier, veteran rival Nate Diaz, and even Michael Chandler, who continues to pay McGregor serious respect as a MMA pioneer.

Middleweight contenders Jack Hermansson and Sean Strickland are expected to headline an upcoming UFC Fight Night event on Feb 5., per a recent report by ESPN’s Brett Okamoto.

According to the report, both fighters should be signing their respective contracts shortly. The UFC event on Feb. 5 currently does not have a location or venue, but it will be the third event of 2022 for the promotion.

Hermansson, 33, is coming off a dominant decision win over Edmen Shahbazyan back in May. “Joker” had lost his previous fight in a main event clash against Italian contender Marvin Vettori, but is still 6-2 inside of the Octagon since the start of 2018. Hermansson will need more than a win over Strickland to launch himself back into title contention, but it would be a great start to his 2022 campaign. At the very least, “Joker” can save some face after getting rag-dolled by Khamzat Chimaev in a wrestling match last month.

Strickland, 30, has been a man on a mission since moving back up to middleweight in Oct. 2020. Since departing the welterweight division Strickland has produced a 4-0 record inside of the Octagon, including a recent decision win over Uriah Hall in his first-ever UFC main event bid. If Strickland is able to walk through Hermansson this February and push his division record to 5-0 it would be hard not to consider him a top title contender for 2022.

George Kambosos Jr. pulled off a huge upset when he outlasted undefeated champion Teofimo Lopez last night (Sat., Nov. 27, 2021) live on DAZN from inside Hulu Theater in New York City. The Australian challenger ended up scoring a split-decision win to claim the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and The Ring lightweight titles.

This fight was bonkers from the opening bell. Both lightweights came out firing and it was actually Kambosos who did the most damage early with a knockdown over the champion. Lopez shook off the early scare to claw his way back on the scorecards in the middle frames. It wasn’t until Round 10 that Lopez found a home for his own knockdown to even the playing field.

However, Kambosos started to separate himself from Lopez in the final two rounds and eventually edged the champ out on the scorecards. Kambosos not only becomes the new lightweight champion and stuns Lopez having just defeated the great Vasyl Lomachenko, but “Ferocious” extends his own unbeaten streak to 20-0.
