MMA Twitter Reacts To ‘Worst Referee In History’ At UFC 267

UFC 267: Zaleski dos Santos v Saint Denis

Fight fans witnessed arguably the most egregious display of MMA officiating ever earlier today (Sat., Oct. 30, 2021) at UFC 267 live on ESPN+ from inside Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi.

The incident transpired during the undercard bout between welterweight veteran Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos and Octagon newcomer Benoit Saint-Denis. After a close first round dos Santos started to tag Saint-Denis on the feet. The Brazilian unloaded everything he had and seemed to have inflicted enough damage to finish Saint-Denis.

However, referee Vyacheslav Kiselev refused to step in to stop the fight in one of the worst referee performances ever. Dos Santos kept firing and nearly tired himself out from all of the output. Saint-Denis did end up surviving and lasted the rest of the fight, but he took about five years of punishment in his first UFC appearance.

Making matters worse was a point deduction handed out by Kiselev during the fight after dos Santos landed an illegal groin strike. There was no warning given and considering this is the same ref who refused to stop the fight when dos Santos was battering Saint-Denis it wasn’t a good look. In fact, Kiselev did such a poor job that he was removed from his scheduled duties for UFC 267’s main card opener between Magomed Ankalaev and Volkan Oezdemir.

As you may have imagined the MMA community was not happy with the horrific officiating. Everyone and anyone took to social media during and after the bout to show their disgust. Check out the reaction below:

Glover Teixeira finally cashed in and captured his first UFC title earlier today (Sat., Oct. 30, 2021) at UFC 267 live on ESPN+ from inside Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, when the Brazilian veteran finished UFC light heavyweight champion Jan Blachowicz via second-round submission (rear-naked choke).

Teixeira scored a massive takedown in the early going to gain the quick momentum. Blachowicz kept his guard closed and didn’t do much to get back to his feet. The champ scored some solid strikes early into the second as he needed to defend another Glover takedown. Teixeira came back to land a big left hook that wobbled the champion and forced Blachowicz to retreat. That’s when Teixeira scored a slick takedown and quickly worked his way into full mount. Blachowicz turned over and gave his back up which allowed Teixeira to score the submission finish.

Petr Yan regained UFC gold earlier today (Sat., Oct. 30, 2021) at UFC 267 live on ESPN+ from inside Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, when the Russian fighter outlasted Cory Sandhagen via unanimous decision to claim the interim bantamweight title.

Both fighters got off early, but it was Sandhagen who was a little more active with volume and level changes. Yan did land a pretty nasty leg kick at the end of the frame that seemed to wobble “Sandman.” Yan came a live more in the second with heavy counter shots, but Sandhagen kept scoring with punches to the body and jabs in bunches.

Yan took control in the third round with power punches and a spinning back fist that knocked Sandhagen to the ground with about a minute left. “Sandman” survived and kept plodding forward with his own offense. Yan went back to his power shots in Round 4 and really started to tee off on Sandhagen. Sandhagen tried to change levels with a few takedown attempts, but Yan was too fresh and precise with every shot.

The fifth and final frame saw Yan land a massive head kick, but Sandhagen ate it and returned fire. Yan kept finding a home for his counter shots and it prohibited “Sandman” from landing anything of true significance down the stretch to steal the fight.
