Nobody knows exactly when Jon Jones will step inside of the Octagon for his long-awaited heavyweight debut, but there’s a big chance “Bones” looks as dangerous as ever.

Jones, who continues to train and pack on muscle for a future heavyweight takeover, is unsure when he’ll fight again. The former UFC light heavyweight champion still hasn’t worked out his contractual finances with UFC and there doesn’t seem to be an immediate end in sight. Jones has brought in some outside help to facilitate the negotiations but it may take a little longer.

In the interim, Jones will dedicate his time to his training. And with everything Jones is doing to bulk up and transform his body into an even larger killing machine there’s a possibility the UFC legend is a better fighter when he returns as a heavyweight.

Jones’ striking coach, Brandon Gibson, shares the same sentiment. Gibson has been working with Jones for a very long time and believes that the former champ’s move to heavyweight could produce even more dominant results.

“Jon has been the most dominant champion in UFC history,” Gibson told MMA Fighting. “He has the record for titles but, man, this goal has sparked a fire in all of us.

“Whether it comes in a few months, or comes in a year-plus, Jon’s 33. I feel like he’s not even in his heavyweight prime yet. We’re taking our time, we’re doing this right and there’s a lot of other business decisions outside of my realm. But my job is to treat Jon Jones as a professional athlete, a professional martial artist and the great champion that he is 24/7.”

“He’s had great success in his 20’s, a great run at light heavyweight, but Jon not only has that focus of being a heavyweight champion with this huge task in front of us, but also his commitment to himself as a professional athlete,” Gibson continued. “I think we have yet to see the most dangerous Jon Jones there is. This version is going to be greater than any of them.”

Jones, 33, hasn’t fought since he defeated Dominick Reyes via unanimous decision back at UFC 247 in Feb. 2020 to retain his 205-pound belt (which was later vacated). The promotion has tried to book a superfight between Jones and current UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou but it simply can’t get done due to the above mentioned issues with Jones’ pay.

Luckily, Jones vs. Ngannou is too big to pass up. It will eventually get booked and Jones will eventually have his opportunity to prove everything he’s saying and become a true heavyweight wrecking machine.

Covington: Edwards Won’t Get Title Shot With Win Over ‘Loser’ Diaz

There’s an argument to be made that Leon Edwards deserves a shot at the UFC welterweight title with a win over Nate Diaz tomorrow night (Sat., June 12, 2021) live on ESPN+ PPV from inside Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona.

That is, of course, unless you ask current No. 1-ranked welterweight contender Colby Covington.

Edwards has a chance to push his current win streak to nine with a win over Diaz this weekend. That type of success is usually good enough to earn a title shot even in a crowded division like welterweight. But when you look at Edwards’ victories since he started his current streak back in 2016 he hasn’t really beaten a top guy. Wins over Rafael dos Anjos and Donald Cerrone are nice, but those guys weren’t kicking the door down at 170 pounds.

Unfortunately for Edwards, the same can be said about Diaz. While Diaz is one of the more popular fighters in the sport today and a guy who can give “Rocky” a run for his money inside of the Octagon he doesn’t offer much upside when it comes to earning a title shot. At the end of the day, Diaz is unranked and he hasn’t fought since Nov. 2019.

For these reasons Covington believes that “Rocky” has no claim to a future title shot even if he goes out and ends Diaz this weekend at UFC 263.

“It makes sense that ‘Edward Scissorhands’ Leon Edwards wants to fight Nate Diaz, another loser and unranked guy – another guy that he’s beaten that has nothing,” Covington recently told MMA Junkie. “He’s not a top-three, top-five fighter, and that’s what ‘Edward Scissorhands’ likes to do.

“He likes to pick these easy fights with these guys that aren’t even relevant to the division and hopefully he’s going to get a little hype from it because nobody cares about him. The guy is literally worthless. He’s a mumbling, fumbling idiot, and it makes sense that he’s going to fight Nate Diaz because they’ve both got marbles in their mouth when they talk all the time.”

Diaz is not an easy fight by any stretch of the imagination but he may not be the type of fighter to push Edwards over the hump in the welterweight division. The UFC does tend to ride the hot hand and in most cases a decisive win over Diaz does lead to great opportunities, but we really don’t know how the promotion is viewing Edwards at this point in time.

Either way, Edwards must get past Diaz to put himself in a position to fight for the title. And considering Covington is expected to earn his rematch against current UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman later this year “Chaos” and “Rocky” could end up locking horns for the belt sometime down the road.

Jairzinho Rozenstruik showed off his world-class punching power earlier tonight (Sat. June 5, 2021) at UFC Vegas 28 live on ESPN+ from inside UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada, when “Bigi Boy” put a stop to heavyweight contender Augusto Sakai with a last-second TKO (punches) in the very first round.

Rozenstruik commanded the center of the cage early and didn’t allow Sakai to find his groove. Sakai did score some solid front kicks to the body, but Rozenstruik was plotting his move. With 10 seconds left in the first “Bigi Boy” connected with a left hook and a right hand behind the ear that sent Sakai crashing to the canvas. Rozenstruik jumped on top for one follow up shot before referee Herb Dean waved the fight off. The official stoppage was 4:59 of Round 1.

UFC Fight Night: Harris v Tybura

Marcin Tybura earned his fifth-straight win in the heavyweight division earlier tonight (Sat. June 5, 2021) at UFC Vegas 28 live on ESPN+ from inside UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada, when the Polish contender stopped knockout artist Walt Harris via first-round TKO (punches).

Harris was able to find his range early and absolutely unloaded on Tybura. The veteran heavyweight was able to eat everything “Big Ticket” dished out and eventually found his way inside for a takedown. Tybura was able to tie up one of Harris’ arms and landed short, but powerful, punches to the side of the head. He then flattened Harris out to land the finishing shots.

Check out the full fight video highlights above courtesy of UFC/ESPN.

Tybura, 35, started his UFC career with a 3-1 record before turning in a 1-4 clip from 2017-2019. Since the beginning of 2020 the Polish contender has come alive in the dangerous heavyweight division with five wins in a row and now two-straight stoppages. That’s good enough for another top 10 opponent his next time out.

Maybe a matchup with Curtis Blaydes?
