VIDEO: Watch Derrick Lewis Flatten Gabriel Gonzaga at Fight Night 86

Thanks to the power of social media, UFC heavyweight Derrick Lewis has quickly risen from another one of the division’s many forgettable faces to one of the sport’s most entertaining personalities. The Black Beast’s Instagram page is a goldmine of fighter-bashing memes and generally strange cultural observations, and the man’s sense of humor can best be described as “don’t give a f*ck” with a heaping side of “come at me, bro.”

Of course, it doesn’t hurt that once inside the octagon, Lewis is nothing short of a stack of C-4 attached to a pair of tree trunks. Whether in victory or defeat, each and every one of Lewis’ eight UFC bouts have ended via some form of hellacious knockout, and his most recent performance against Gabriel Gonzaga was no different.

Having suffered 9 out of his 11 professional losses by way of (T)KO, the general consensus seemed to be that Gonzaga would have to take Lewis down and work his vastly superior jiu jitsu game in order to secure a victory. While “Napao” was able to do just that in the early going, it was Lewis’ defense on the ground that was arguably more impressive. “The Black Beast” not only managed to escape Gonzaga’s mount, but shucked off a rear-naked choke attempt with the concern of a man ordering a pizza via Domino’s emoji-based delivery system.

And when the fight was forced back to the feet, it was only a matter of time until Gonzaga ate canvas, and boy did he ever. Lewis landed a monster uppercut that sent Gonzaga crashing to the mat and finished him off with a few follow-up punches, marking his third straight TKO finish inside the octagon. Up next for Lewis? It looks like a match against Roy Nelson.

As for Gonzaga, it might be about that time to consider retirement. The former title challenger has lost 4 out of his 5 last fights (3 by KO) and his only win in the past three years came in the hands down worst fight of 2015. With a UFC career dating back over 10 years and a dozen wins, “Napao” has nothing left to prove and would be best served saving what few brain cells he has left for things like playing Connect Four and remembering the names of his family members without a prompt.

In the main event of Fight Night 68′s heavyweight-heavy main card, Junior Dos Santos found his way back in the win column via a one-sided unanimous decision over the streaking Ben Rothwell. The former champ’s advantage in the speed department was noticeable from the get-go and was aided over the ensuing five rounds by the record number of body shots he was able to land on his flat-footed opponent. Probably the single greatest highlight from the fight was the Sparta kick JDS landed in the closing moments of the second round.

The win was a much-needed one for Dos Santos, who had gone 3-2 in his past 5 bouts since defending his title way back in 2012. Rothwell, on the other hand, saw a four fight win streak snapped in what may very well be a telling performance about just how far his awkward style can take him in the heavyweight division.

The full results for Fight Night 68 are below.

Miesha Tate vs. Amanda Nunes Booked for UFC 200, As Ronda Rousey’s Self-Imposed Exile Continues

(via Getty.)

Following her shocking upset win over Holly Holm at UFC 196, the general consensus seemed to be that she would defend her title against rival Ronda Rousey next, despite the fact that Rousey a) had not competed since her loss to Holm at UFC 193 and b) still had not offered a timetable for her return. Regardless of the UFC’s plans, Tate told reporters shortly after the fight was announced that she didn’t foresee Rousey returning to the octagon anytime soon.

“She’s obviously said that she’s so emotional to the point where she’s considering crazy things and it’s like this is a broken woman,” said Tate during an appearance on The Jay Mohr Show. “I don’t know if she’ll ever come back the same.”

For the time being, it appears that Tate might be onto something. Last night, it was announced that Tate would be making her first title defense at UFC 200, and the opponent was probably the last person you’d expect…

It’s not Rousey, it’s not even Holm, but Brazliaian slugger Amanda Nunes that Tate will be facing next. The news was first broke via Ariel Helwani on Twitter and confirmed shortly thereafter by UFC officials.

Currently 5-1 in her UFC career with 4 stoppage victories, Nunes is fresh off a unanimous decision victory over Peruvian prospect Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 196. In the evening’s post-fight press conference, Nunes was adamant that she should be next in line for a title shot, claiming that Rousey and Holm should first have to battle before facing Tate. The newly-crowned champ seemed open to the idea, and wouldn’t you know it, the UFC actually went with the sensible route for once.

As for what this development says about the MMA future of Ronda Rousey, well, that’s a little more cloudy. It definitely isn’t a good sign that she has once again gone completely off the radar, in any case, especially considering how fired up she seemed after hearing of Tate’s title win.

“I texted Ronda — Ronda wasn’t watching the fight. I text Ronda and she said ‘what happened?’, said Dana White to reporters following UFC 196. “I said ‘Miesha just choked her unconscious’ and she said ‘looks like I’ve got to get back to work.”

Unfortunately for Dana, that work was the female-centric Road House reboot, it seems.

The Tate vs. Nunes title fight will be joining what is already an insanely stacked card in UFC 200, which will be headlined by a welterweight rematch between Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz.

Dear God, No: Is Dada 5000 Actually Considering Another MMA Fight?

(Unless he plans on actually using that sledgehammer, this is going to end poorly.)

Vince Lombardi was once famously quoted as saying that “It’s not whether you get knocked down, it’s whether you get up” that is the true measure of a man. Then again, he also died of stupid butthole cancer because he was too proud to get a proctoscopic exam, so what the f*ck does he know?

What we’re getting at is, there comes a time in everyone’s life where throwing in the towel doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re refusing (or unable) to get up. In the combat sports world especially, we’ve seen countless fighters place ego above all else and continue fighting well beyond the point that their bodies have told them to stop, and to what end? (More often than not,  few wholly unnecessary concussions.

So if you were, say, a 38-year-old guy who nearly died from kidney failure while competing in your first MMA fight in 5 years, you’d probably hang up the 4 oz. gloves for good and thank your God for bringing you out of that coma you were in, right? Well, not if you’re Dada 5000 you wouldn’t!

Despite spending two weeks in a hospital following his near-fatal loss to Kimbo Slice at Bellator 149, it looks like Dada 5000 aka Dhafir Harris might actually be considering another fight. In a statement posted to his instagram this morning, Dada cleared up what went down on the night of Bellator 149 — which was somehow much, much worse than you think — and kinda sorta hinted that he would be returning to the cage to give this silly little sport another try.

The post has since been taken down, but BloodyElbow was able to grab a screenshot:

Wait, so Dada not only suffered kidney failure, but two heart attacks during the fight *and* coded? And he still wants to fight?!!

You know what, f*ck it. You’ve earned this, Mr. 5000. (*salutes*)

Probably the saddest thing about this whole idea is the fact that Bellator will DEFINITELY book him another fight. Hell, they’ve probably already started hyping up Dada vs. Kimbo II.

“One has heart-stopping power, the other can literally come back from the dead! Tune in this summer to see the sequel to the ultimate street brawl at Bellator 188: Coronary!!”

I know Bellator doesn’t typically name their events, but you get the picture.

And So It Begins: The #PotatoCurse Claims Its Second Victim, Tony Ferguson

(Wait, it was the *other* guy who got injured for once? You’re kidding…)

For close to a week now, we’ve been hinting that a great rash of injuries was set to befall the UFC. Chalk it up to our well-documented knack for predicting the future, chalk it up to the series of Rube Goldbergian traps we placed in the homes of several prominent MMA fighters, but we haven’t help but shake the feeling that 2016 will bring with it an injury curse that makes the injury curse of 2012 look like a series of bumps and bruises.

The Great Injury Curse of 2016 — henceforth to be known and referred to as the #PotatoCurse by *all* MMA media entities — got off to a promising start last week, claiming Daniel Cormier just weeks out from his highly-anticipated title fight rematch with uber rival Jon Jones. Last night, the #PotatoCurse claimed its second victim in the form of lightweight Tony Ferguson, forcing him out of his #1 contender bout against Khabib Nurmagomedov and destroying the second straight UFC main event in as many weeks.

Details after the jump.

Last night, the #PotatoCurse claimed its second victim in the form of lightweight Tony Ferguson, forcing him out of his #1 contender bout against Khabib Nurmagomedov and destroying the second straight UFC main event in as many weeks.

Details after the jump.

Yes, just two weeks out from his UFC on FOX 19 main event, “El Cucuy” took to Instagram to relay the news of an injury that you don’t hear a lot of in *any* professional sport.

“I am out of my Fight Due to Blood/Fluid in my Lung,” wrote Ferguson. “Usually I can Power Through These things. Doc said it wasn’t wise to Fight due to any more trauma could be terminal.”

Ferguson later wrote that he should be cleared to fight again in a few weeks, but in his absence, the UFC went ahead and bumped the evening’s scheduled co-main event between Rashad Evans and Glover Teixeira into the main event slot. This now makes for the second time in a row that this Nurmy vs. Cucuy has been cancelled due to injury.

But there may be hope, in that no less than 5 fighters from two different weight classes have offered to step in against Nurmagomedov on extremely short notice. As you might expect, one of these people is Donald Cerrone, but perhaps the most intriguing name in the mix is current lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos. In a message posted to his Twitter, Dos Anjos called out the Dagestani grappler (and the last man to beat him) for a fight this summer.

“Sorry to hear Ferguson is out. @TeamKhabib We have some unfinished business, I’ll be ready in July.”

Ferguson’s response was nothing short of nuclear.

BJ Penn also threw his name in the mix, but with the UFC not wanting to witness its first in-ring murder anytime soon, his name was quickly thrown out. As of this write-up, it looks like Cerrone is being given top bill to face Nurmagomedov in a welterweight contest, but only if he can still fight Patrick Cote in June as well.

Honestly, we’re still trying to wrap our heads around the idea that Khabib Nurmagomedov has made it through an entire training camp intact. We’ll let you know who the UFC decides on as an opponent for him when/if it happens.
