Daniel Cormier Injured, Jon Jones Now Faces Ovince St Preux at UFC 197

(“For those that think it’s that easy to matchmake.” via the Jackson-Wink Twitter)

With the UFC set to hold two of the most stacked cards in promotional history in the coming weeks — UFC 198 and UFC 200 — there’s been an overwhelming feeling that shit was all but destined to hit the fan in one capacity or another. “Conor McGregor suffers another ACL tear.” “Nate Diaz shot backstage at Snoop Dogg concert.” “Fabricio Werdum retires amidst actual prostitution scandal.” These were all headlines that we could have seen coming over the weekend, because this sport is nothing if not an unpredictable circus.

What you might not expect, however, is that the bad luck that always finds its way to MMA would trickle down to an unrelated fight card, like say, UFC 197. Which, with the MMA Gods being the vengeful, sadistic asshole that they are, is of course what happened.

What you might not expect, however, is that the bad luck that always finds its way to MMA would trickle down to an unrelated fight card, like say, UFC 197. Which, with the MMA Gods being the vengeful, sadistic asshole that they are, is of course what happened.

Thanks to a lower leg injury suffered in training, Daniel Cormier has been forced out of his UFC 197 title fight rematch with Jon Jones.

The announcement of Cormier’s withdrawal was made late Friday night. In an interview with MMAFighting published this morning, the light heavyweight champ elaborated on what exactly led him to withdraw from the fight.

“I was in practice sparring and I kicked one of my partners [with an] inside low kick and he checked it. And I fell down, and I was ‘ahh, that was painful,’ and [trainer] Bob Cook was laughing. We get kick checked all the time. Sometimes you bruise your shin, and in a couple days it passes.”

“I get up to try to spar again, and another guy did a little front kick to my shin,” Cormier continued. “And when he did it I fell to the ground again, and I said, okay, this hurts a little bit more than normal, so I’m going to probably stop sparring. So I stopped sparring.”

After undergoing a series of MRI’s, Cormier was diagnosed with a torn leg ligament and given a 4-6 week recovery time.

Not wanting to lose yet another main event to injury, the UFC quickly booked the only available top 10 light heavyweight, Ovince St. Preux, to step in on just a few weeks’ notice.

Currently 3-1 in his past 4 with high-profile wins over Rafael Cavalcante and Mauricio Rua, OSP is relishing the opportunity, telling MMAJunkie that “He’s a beast, and I’m a beast, too. We both can do some beast (expletive).”

Well said, OSP.

In the meantime, Jones and Cormier have been needling the absolute shit out of each other on Twitter, so we’ll be sure to keep an eye on that for any more “developments.”

(Wait, the same people who designed this travesty are capable of making this? AIN’T. BUYING. IT.)

Regardless of how we all felt when rumors first started swirling that the UFC would be booking an immediate rematch between Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz for UFC 200, the one thing we could all agree is that we WOULD TOTALLY WATCH THAT SH*T AGAIN. Whether the fight was contested at welterweight, lightweight, Franklinweight, or Moneyweight, there wasn’t a red-blooded MMA fan alive that wouldn’t fork over sixty bucks or the password to the illegal streaming website with which they watch all pay-per-views to see this rematch.

As such, the UFC announced this morning that a welterweight rematch between McGregor vs. Diaz II would in fact be headlining UFC 200. But that’s not all, not by a long shot…

Also revealed to be on tap for UFC 200, if you can believe it, are the following fights:

1) Frankie Edgar vs. Jose Aldo II (for the interim featherweight title) – Yes, while the featherweight champion continues his quest to become a welterweight contender, the man whose four year reign he ended will begin picking up the pieces by rematching the former lightweight champion at featherweight. Crazy times, these are. Anyways, Aldo and Edgar will do battle once again with the interim featherweight title on the line, with the winner receiving the next shot against McGregor whenever he feels like rejoining the 145 pound division.

2) Cain Velasquez vs. Travis Browne – the former heavyweight champion will return from his latest injury layoff (you know, the one that cost him a rematch against new champ Fabricio Werdum) to take on perennial contender Travis Browne, who is fresh off a third round, foul-filled TKO of Matt Mitrione back in January.

3) Johny Hendricks vs. Kelvin Gastelum – In a battle of guys juuuust a bit too heavy to make 170, former welterweight champion Johny Hendricks will take on TUF 17 winner Kelvin Gastelum. The former is on the heels of a devastating first round KO loss to Stephen Thompson last month, while the latter faced a recent setback of his own in the form of a split decision loss to late replacement opponent Neil Magny. The odds on this thing making it past the weigh-ins? 20-to-1.

4) Diego Sanchez vs. Joe Lauzon – Hot off his first legitimate win in the past six years, Diego “The Nightmare Within a Dream Within a Nightmare” Sanchez will face lightweight staple and bonus king Joe Lauzon, who has dropped two out of his past three fights to Evan Dunham and Al Iaquinta. These two were originally scheduled to meet at UFC 180 until injuries saw them both removed from the card.

5) Takanori Gomi vs. Jim Miller – In what is likely a “loser leaves town” match for both veterans, “The Fireball Kid” will look to rebound from back-to-back TKO losses to Myles Jury and Joe Lauzon against Miller, who himself has dropped two straight to Michael Chiesa and Diego Sanchez.

6) Sage Northcutt vs. Enrique Marin – After suffering the first loss of his professional career to Bryan Barberena, everybody’s favorite front-flipping wonderkid has been booked to face Enrique “Wasabi” Marin, a relative unknown who dropped his UFC debut to Erick Montano at Fight Night 87 in November of last year.

6) Gegard Mousasi vs. Derek Brunson – This one was announced earlier this month, but since we don’t cover really cover fight bookings anymore, we’ll just include it here. The former Strikeforce champion is coming off a decision win over Thales Leites in the co-feature bout of UFC Fight Night 84 on Feb. 27, while the former Strikeforce competitor has rattled off four straight victories including a recent KO of Roan Carneiro at Fight Night: Cowboy vs. Cowboy last month.

Also being rumored for UFC 200 is the long-awaited return of women’s bantamweight title challenger Cat Zingano. While the fight hasn’t been made official yet, Zingano is reportedly expected to face TUF 18 winner Julianna Pena in an undercard bout. Our advice for Cat? Protect your balls.

Suffice it to say, UFC 200 is shaping up to be not only one the best card of the year, but one of the best in UFC history. We’ll be sure to keep you updated as it is inevitably torn apart by injury…

And Now He’s Fired: Jared Rosholt Released by the UFC For Being Boring, Basically

(A fittingly memorable photo for a fittingly memorable fighter. Farewell to thee, Jeremy Rosewall.)

Because some of you fans (and to be fair, some of us in the media) are still convinced that MMA is a sport and not a form of entertainment, there has been a bit of a reaction to the firing of UFC heavyweight Jared Rosholt — if “(*wanking motion*)” counts as a reaction nonetheless.

Rosholt was officially released from the promotion this morning despite compiling a respectable 6-2 record in his tenure with the UFC that included three wins in his past 4 performances. The general consensus seems to be that Rosholt was the latest example of UFC valuing “entertainment” over “skill,” but in our eyes, his firing breaks down to two simple factors:

1) He was nicknamed “The Big Show” but never put on a show

2) He lost to Roy Nelson

As we all know, Dana White has as much love for Big Country as Donald Trump does for our Ecuadorian friends down there in Mexico, so if you’re a UFC heavyweight who both loses to Roy Nelson and doesn’t have the common decency to get knocked out by Roy Nelson, you should probably expect your walking papers come the morning.

For us, the bigger offense lies in Rosholt’s offensive and plain presumptuous decision to steal Paul Donald Wight Jr’s ring name. “The Big Show” is a name that has to be earned through the chokeslamming of thine, enemies, Jared. Not through sloppy, grapple-fucked decisions. You know who never once let the judges decide if he was the winner? The actual Big Show.

I mean, just look at that athleticism, that grace. The marks of a true champion, surely.

Anyways, because we are the “true” fans of the sport who will take a well-executed double leg over a fancy side check kick KO any day of the week, we have scoured the Internet for clips of Mr. Rosholt finest work to compile this highlight reel in his honor.

So Paige VanZant is Pretty Much Crushing It on Dancing With the Stars [VIDEO]

The history of UFC fighters appearing on Dancing With the Stars has been a brief but painful one. Chuck Liddell was the first to break the mold in Season 9, getting axed after the 4th week and finishing in 11th place (out of 16) overall. His old rival Randy Couture was next to appear some ten seasons later, but met a similarly swift end. Big Nog and Denis Kang also appeared in the Brazilian and Korean versions of the show, respectively, but failed to make it past the first few rounds. Who would think that professional fighters would have such notoriously terrible footwork?

Enter UFC strawweight Paige VanZant, who announced earlier this month that she had signed on to join the 22nd season (!) of the hit ABC competition show following her hard-fought loss to Rose Namajunas last year. Given VanZant’s athleticism and background as a former dancer, it seemed as if she would be the first MMA fighter to actually excel on the show, and she’s done nothing short of that thus far.

Last night, VanZant overcame a last-minute injury (of her dancing partner, Mark Ballas) to claim the highest score of the season, a 24, by dancing the tango alongside replacement partner Alan Bersten. Check out the video of her performance above.

After the jump: VanZant’s debut performance from the first episode of the season.

VIDEO: Jon Jones Cited in ANOTHER Traffic Violation, Calls Officer a “F*cking Liar”

(Jon Jones: Turning the entire world into Daniel Cormier fans, one police officer at a time.)

We may be relatively early into the new year, but at this point, it would be safe to declare that Jon Jones might have The “Really? You’re Just Gonna Keep Doing That Shit That Gets You in All That Trouble?” Award a.k.a. “The Koppenhaver” locked up for this year’s Potato Awards.

Seemingly not satisfied with the pair of DUI-related car accidents he’s already been involved in, the former light heavyweight champion was nabbed yet again for speeding and driving without a license, registration, or insurance at the beginning of the year. While most of us would have probably accepted our shortcomings as a driver and hung up our keys by this point, Jon Jones is not most of us. As such, “Bones” was cited YET AGAIN last week for a handful of vehicle-related offenses, then proceeded to verbally berate the officer who pulled him over.

Video after the jump.

As such, “Bones” was cited YET AGAIN last week for a handful of vehicle-related offenses, then proceeded to verbally berate the officer who pulled him over.

Video after the jump.

In an effort to spin the story before it even go out, Jones appeared on THE MMA Hour yesterday to rebuff his most recent citations, which included drag racing, driving with a modified exhaust and an illegible license plate, not staying in his lane, and “exhibition driving.”

“I definitely wasn’t drag racing,” said Jones. “He needed something to justify pulling me over. He fabricated the whole thing that I was drag racing.”

Jones then went on to apologize for losing his cool when dealing with the officer who pulled him over, the entire conversation of which was captured on the officer’s body cam and released on TMZ last night.

You can check out a complete description of the conversation over at BloodyElbow, but the tl;dr version is that Jones repeated called the officer a “f*cking liar” and a “pig” among other nasty things.

Being that the officer’s body cam didn’t appear to catch Jones in the act of drag racing, the legitimacy of the former champ’s claims remains a matter of opinion. Given Jones’ history behind the wheel, it’s easy to assume that he was probably guilty in this case, but at the same time, the timeliness in which the video surfaced online does come off as suspect to say the very least.

Whether he’s being targeted by Albuquerque police or not, one would assume that this would be the incident that forces Jones to hire a goddamn driver already. Then again, if breaking a pregnant woman’s and fleeing the scene didn’t already do that, who knows what will? One minute, the guy’s giving pep talks to local teens about the dangers of drunk driving, and the next, he’s doing 40 miles an hour over the speed limit and telling cops to go f*ck themselves. He is truly the Jason Miller of the road.

We’ll have more on this story as it develops, but in the meantime…
