Lyoto Machida might have some extra motivation for his upcoming showdown against Gegard Mousasi.

Machida, the former UFC light heavyweight champion, could possibly earn a middleweight title shot if he defeats Mousasi at UFC Fight Night 36 on Feb. 15 in Jaragua do Sul, Brazil.

“If Lyoto Machida wins, he could be in line next for a title shot,” UFC president Dana White said on FOX Sports Live on Wednesday night.

UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman will put his belt on the line against Vitor Belfort at UFC 173 on May 24. White couldn’t be happier with how the middleweight division is shaping up right now.

“The thing that makes this 185-pound division so interesting and so exciting right now. Obviously, Chris Weidman looked unbelievable in his two fights against Anderson Silva and the new champ,” White said. “But who do we got waiting in the wings now? You’ve got Vitor Belfort next, you have Jacare Souza, you have Lyoto Machida and the list goes on and on of all these nasty, nasty guys at 185 pounds. And let’s not forget Anderson Silva could be back in a year and he’s the No. 1 ranked [contender] in the world. That division could not be more exciting.”

Dana White: Hurdle cleared in possible Jose Aldo vs. Anthony Pettis fight

UFC president Dana White believes he took care of one of the obstacles in in the way of a Jose Aldo and Anthony Pettis superfight Wednesday.

“I think what Aldo was worried about, is if Aldo moves up to 155 and vacates the title, he wants to be treated like a champion in this fight – which he would be,” White said on FOX Sports Live. “All the things that he gets at 145 pounds as a champion he would receive, and I think that was part of the issue, and that was all worked out today.”

If Aldo moves up to 155 pounds, and gives up his title, White predicted a scenario of Chad Mendes and Cub Swanson fighting for the vacant featherweight title.

“If Aldo lost at 155, he could move back down and challenge the new champion for that [145] belt,” White said.

Earlier Wednesday, Pettis’ manager Mike Roberts believed Aldo didn’t want to give up the featherweight title and they were preparing to fight someone else.

“We’re interested in Anthony defending his belt against the top guys at 155,” Roberts told MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani. “If Aldo doesn’t want to fight for the belt, we’ll fight someone else.”

Aldo’s manager Andre Pederneiras said in a televised interview recently he wanted to do the fight at a catchweight so both fighters wouldn’t put their belts on the line.

“(A catchweight) would be interesting for both,” Pederneiras said. “They would keep the belts and do the fight everybody wants to see. Nobody wants to take the other’s title, we want to see the fight and do a great show for everybody. Aldo would move up a little, Pettis cuts a little, and it’s good for everybody.”

Jessica Eye will definitely compete at UFC 170.

Eye, who will face Alexis Davis at the event, was fined $1,875 and issued a one-year “fully probated suspension” recently after testing positive for a “prohibited drug” after her fight against Sarah Kaufman at UFC 166.

The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation overturned her split-decision victory into a no-decision.

Here are Zuffa’s and Eye’s statements below:

“The UFC received word of the fully probated suspension and fine issued to Jessica Eye by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. The UFC intends to honor the probation, which will not force Eye to miss her scheduled bout at UFC 170.” – Zuffa

“I was recently alerted to the fact that I was issued a fully probated suspension and fine by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. While I intend to discuss with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation the overturning of my victory at UFC 166, I have accepted the terms of the probation and intend to compete at UFC 170 on Feb. 22. I pride myself on following the rules and representing my family, teammates, sponsors, and fans in the best light possible. I apologize for any distractions this has caused.” – Jessica Eye
