Canadian featherweight Mark Hominick (19-8) will have a lot riding on the line when he steps into the octagon on Jan. 22 against Goerge Roop. During Tuesday’s press conference for the upcoming UFC: Fight for the Troops 2 UFC event, the promotions President Dana White announced that a win for Hominick would earn him a title shot against José Aldo (18-1) at the upcoming UFC 129 event.
“If Mark Hominick wins this fight, he gets a shot at the title with Aldo. That will be in Toronto.”
When asked what White would do if Hominick lost, the UFC President didn’t have an answer.
Hominick has won four in a row making his last cage appearance at WEC 51 in September, earning a split decision over Leonard Garcia. In that stretch he also earned wins over Yves Jabouin at WEC 49, Bryan Caraway at WEC 46, and Savant Young at the Affliction: Banned event. Hominich has already appeared twice in the UFC back in 2006 going 2-0 a beating Jorge Gurgel and Yves Edwards.
Aldo is coming off his second successful WEC title defense, and if he faces Hominick on April 30th he’ll defend his UFC featherweight title for the first time. The Brazilian has won eleven bouts in a row including eight under the WEC banner. His last fight was in September at WEC 51 when he defended his title against Manvel Gamburyan by KOing his opponent in the second round.
