ADCC’s return to Brazil would feature no double gold winners, nor any UFC or MMA fighters taking gold or silver, but there was still success for UFC veterans and active members of the world’s leading MMA organization to be had at this year’s most prestigious no gi submission grappling tournament.
In the +99kg division, former UFC light heavyweight Vinny Magalhaes took bronze. The Las Vegas-based fighter submitted both of his opposition on Saturday and advanced to the semis where he was controlled by eventual division gold medalist and Fabricio Werdum-training partner Orlando Sanchez. In the bronze medal match, however, Magalhaes rebounded by submitting Joao Rocha via heel hook. That means in all the matches within his weight division that he won, Magalhaes did so by submission.
The Brazilian would move into the open weight division, getting past Garry Tonon on penalties in the first round, but would fail to get past Claudio Calasans.
UFC lightweight Gilbert Burns also managed to medal, taking the bronze in the -77kg division. ‘Durinho’ started the day losing by submission to eventual division winner Davi Ramos, but was also able to make good on the second act by scoring two double leg takedowns against Otavio Souza. Burns was not a participant in the open weight division.
Having less success on Sunday was former UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson. Competing in the men’s -77kg division, he was submitted in the first round on Saturday by Abdukadirov Magomed via rear naked choke/jaw crank. On Sunday he didn’t fare much better as he was submitted via kimura from mounted triangle by Rodolfo Vieira in the open weight division.
Legacy FC bantamweight and undefeated MMA fighter as well as jiu-jitsu world champion Augusto Mendes managed to earn the bronze in the -66kg division.
UFC lightweight Vagner Rocha was knocked out of the -77kg division on Saturday after losing to Otavio Souza in the quarterfinals. He advanced past the first round on Sunday with a win over Romulo Barral in the open weight first round, but lost to Joao Rocha in that division’s quarterfinals.
