Former Strikeforce champ Alistair ‘The Reem’ Overeem (36-12, 1NC) has been forced out of his upcoming UFC 160 bout with former UFC champ Junior dos Santos (15-2) due to an undisclosed training injury which will keep the Dutch fighter out for about a month.
News of the injury surfaced at MMAFighting.com on Wednesday afternoon.
No word yet from the promotion or Dos Santos as to whether or not the bout will be rescheduled for another date or if ‘Cigano’ will face a new opponent.
UFC 160: Velasquez vs. Silva II is expected to take place on May 25, 2013 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez will meet Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva in a rematch in the main event.
Overeem saw a twelve fight undefeated streak end last month at UFC 156 against ‘Bigfoot’ after the Brazilian dropped ‘The Reem’ by third round knockout. Prior to that, Overeem debuted in the Octagon in December 2011 at UFC 141 picking up a first round TKO finish of Brock Lesnar.
Dos Santos also saw a long win streak end at ten-fights after suffering a decision defeat at the hands of Velasquez in a title rematch this past December at UFC 155. Prior to that ‘Cigano’ defended the title against Frank Mir at UFC 146 by picking up a second round TKO finish.
