The co-main event of UFC São Paulo has been scrapped, as Sam Alvey has pulled out of his fight with Shogun Rua.
Sam Alvey has pulled out of his co-main event fight against Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua next month at UFC São Paulo.
Combate first reported the news. The report states Alvey pulled out of the fight for an undisclosed reason. It’s understood that Rua is hoping to get a new opponent and remain the São Paulo card.
Alvey (33-13, 1NC) is currently on a three-fight losing streak for the first time ever in his MMA career. Losing a decision to Klidson Abreu in July and suffering a KO loss to Jimmy Crute at the beginning of the year, the 33-year-old also lost to “Minotouro” Nogueira in November last year.
After losing to Anthony Smith at UFC Hamburg in July of last year, Rua (26-11) rebounded by knocking out Tyson Pedro at UFC Adelaide, earning himself a $50,000 bonus on the night. The former UFC light heavyweight champion went unbeaten from 2015-17, winning decisions against Nogueira and Corey Anderson and stopping Gian Villante at UFC Fortaleza.
UFC São Paulo takes place on November 16th and will be headlined by a light heavyweight fight between Jan Blachowicz and Jacare Souza, who will be making his 205-pound debut on the night.
