Most critics and fans predicted a quick finish on Saturday night at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California for the main event of UFC on FOX show.
They would not be proven wrong as Brazilian heavyweight Junior dos Santos scored with a big overhand right to the head of Cain Velasquez, sending the champ to the mat. ‘Cigano’ would follow it up more punches on the ground forcing referee ‘Big John’ McCarthy to step in ending the fight at 1:04.
Despite being a very pro-Velasquez crowd, the fans offered the new champion some rousing cheers for his 64-second knockout.
After the quick commercial break, an emotional Dos Santos could be heard weeping with joy in the background as he celebrated his victory with his corner, which included his mentor former champ Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.
After UFC president Dana White put the belt around the Brazilians waist announcer Joe Rogan spoke to the overwhelmed Dos Santos who stated “I have no words to say how I’m feeling. It’s amazing, my life. I have a lot of good people around me.”
Dos Santos will now meet the winner of the upcoming UFC 141 bout on December 30 as former champ Brock Lesnar meets the last Strikeforce champ, Alistair Overeem in Las Vegas, Nevada.
