Drew Dober sustained one of the worst cuts of all time earlier tonight (Sat., July 13, 2024) at UFC Denver live on ESPN/ESPN+ from inside Ball Arena in Denver, Colorado, during an eventual third-round TKO (doctor’s stoppage) loss to rising prospect Jean Silva.
Silva was filling in on short notice after a win at UFC 303 two weeks ago and moving up in weight. The featherweight brawler turned in a second-round knockout over Charles Jourdain his last time out and was hoping to find success on the feet against Dober as well. Dober is always a willing participant so fight fans knew the lightweight scrap would be a good one.
While Dober displayed a solid chin early on and seemed to have a slight power advantage, Silva’s speed, in-and-out movement, and shot selection, allowed him to really bust Dober’s face up. A few spinning elbows and left hooks split Dober’s right eyebrow wide open. There was blood everywhere.
The ringside doctor took a look at the cut but the fight was able to proceed and eventually came to a head midway through the third round. Dober’s face was such a bloody mess that even Silva was trying to point it out to the referee. Eventually, Herb Dean stepped in to wave it off and save Dober from any further punishment.
