That’s what happens when you become the scapegoat, you get blamed for EVERYTHING.
Just ask veteran mixed martial arts (MMA) referee Mario Yamasaki, who became the fall guy in the wake of Priscilla Cachoeira’s bloody beatdown at the hands of Valentina Shevchenko last weekend at UFC Belem in Brazil.
Sure, her corner was ready to let her die, but let’s not get bogged down in silly little details.
Yamasaki’s performance did not go unnoticed by the Brazilian Athletic Commission of MMA (CABMMA), who found him at fault for failing to protect “Zombie Girl” from unnecessary punishment. In addition, he was held accountable for the promotion’s decision to match a UFC rookie against one of the top female fighters on the planet.
CABMMA elaborates to MMA Junkie:
“As to the matchmaking, the fight was approved by CABMMA. If it was not well matched, and that was being evidently demonstrated during the fight, it should have been identified by the referee in charge, as he is the highest authority in that moment, and his role is to protect the fighter at all times, including stopping the fight at the proper moment.
I guess the only proper ending was to rule it a TKO at the touch of gloves.
Yamasaki defended his decision, which aired on FOX Sports 1, while echoing her corner’s claims that Cachoeira deserved to go out like a “warrior.” Heck, even Valentina Shevchenko was sticking up for the referee, as well as the matchmakers.
