Former women’s bantamweight bruiser, Liz Carmouche, already has a UFC win at 125 pounds. More importantly, she also holds a victory over women’s flyweight title contender, Valentina Shevchenko, thanks to a second-round stoppage at C3 Fights way back in 2010.
Former strawweight champion, Joanna Jedrzejczyk, has neither.
But that hasn’t stopped the power-punching Pole from securing a crack at the vacant flyweight crown when she battles “Bullet” at the upcoming UFC 231 pay-per-view (PPV) event, scheduled for Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on Dec. 8, 2018.
“When I heard it, I was bummed,” Carmouche told MMA Fighting. “I understand the storyline aspect, but she hasn’t beaten anyone in this weight class. It’s quickly becoming a stacked weight class and there are plenty of fighters who have competed at 125 and won fights in the UFC.”
The title was stripped from former champion Nicco Montano after a botched weight cut at UFC 228. Following some confusion about who would get first dibs, which included the hot-headed Sijara Eubanks, the promotion ultimately stuck with Jedrzejczyk.
“I’m the only one who has ever finished [Shevchenko] in MMA,” Carmouche said. “Not in Muay Thai or kickboxing. I’m talking MMA. So, that would just, you think that would make sense for me to be the one to compete against her.”
While it’s too late for Carmouche to do anything about the upcoming UFC 231 co-main event, the “Girl-Rilla” (12-6) won’t rule out the possibility of fighting Montano to determine the next contender for the 125-pound crown.
