Former Strikeforce heavyweight ‘The Grave Digger’ Chad Griggs (11-2) has opted to drop down to light heavyweight after a one sided loss in his Octagon debut last month at UFC 145.

UFC officials announced the move by Griggs, naming ‘Mr. Wonderful’ Phil Davis (9-1) as his opponent for this August’s upcoming UFC on FOX 4 event.

After losing to Travis Browne at UFC 145, heavyweight Strikeforce veteran Chad “Grave Digger” Griggs has verbally agreed to drop to the light heavyweight division. Welcoming him at 205 pounds will be Browne’s teammate, pedigreed wrestler Phil “Mr. Wonderful” Davis. The two have verbally agreed to meet at the UFC on FOX event in August.

UFC on Fox: Stann vs. Lombard (aka UFC on FOX 4) is expected to take place on August 4, 2012 at Staples Center in Los Angeles, California and is headlined by a middleweight bout between Brian Stann vs. Hector Lombard.

Griggs was choked out by Travis Browne last month in Atlanta, Georgia. Browne would land a flying knee to Griggs chin early in the first, eventually turned the opportunity into an arm-triangle submission and forcing the tap at 2:29 of the round. The defeat ended a six fight win streak for Griggs who had three stoppages in the Strikeforce cage.

Davis enters the match on a loss also, the first of his career after losing a unanimous decision to former champ Rashad Evans this past January at the UFC on FOX 2 show in Chicago. Davis had won nine straight, including five in the Octagon with his last victory coming in March of last year with a decision win over Antônio Rogério Nogueira at UFN 24.
