Just because Conor McGregor is leaving mixed martial arts (MMA) behind in favor of a superfight with boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. on Aug. 26 doesn’t mean the UFC champion isn’t sharpening all of his combat tools. After all, the 29-year-old Irishman is planning a return to the Octagon later this year.
In a recent Instagram post (shown above), McGregor’s head coach, John Kavanagh, showcased “Notorious” wrapping up an arm and working towards a submission. As if that wasn’t enough, the Straight Blast Gym leader teased the idea of McGregor using the technique on Mayweather when the two superstars meet inside of boxing ring next weekend.
“This technique is designed to rupture the major collateral ligaments in the elbow joint,” Kavanagh wrote. “It is powerful enough to cause an avulsion fracture. Luckily for FM he does not have to worry about this next Saturday. Or does he?”
While Kavanagh is just having some fun at the expense of “Money,” it would really be this easy for McGregor to snatch up Mayweather’s arm and rip it straight off. Unfortunately for McGregor, his meeting with Mayweather will consist of only boxing gloves and punches.
If McGregor did decide to mix in anything illegal he could stand to lose 90 percent of his potential $100 million purse. It simply wouldn’t be worth it. Not to mention the fact that McGregor already has to mind his “dirty” techniques inside of the ring to avoid a potential law suit by Team Mayweather.
Mayweather vs. McGregor will go down on Showtime pay-per-view (PPV) live from inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, with a main card start time of 9 p.m. ET.
