Coach: ‘Scary’ Chad Mendes will finish ‘court jester’ Conor McGregor in second round

Chad Mendes stepped in on short notice for UFC 189, and plans on ruining “The Conor McGregor show” in Las Vegas.

“Money” will replace injured champion Jose Aldo and face “The Notorious” for the interim title on July 11, and his jiu-jitsu coach Fabio “Pateta” Prado guarantees Mendes is ready despite taking the fight on two weeks’ notice.

“He will grab this opportunity and go for it. Everything will be alright,” Prado told MMAFighting.com. “It’s on short notice, but his heart and experience will make the difference. Alpha Male doesn’t turn down fights and that’s why we have credit with the UFC. Chad is always training, dreaming about this.”

McGregor’s critics say he hasn’t been tested by a wrestler before earning a shot at the UFC gold, and they can expect Mendes to go for takedowns at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

“It’s a good match-up,” “Pateta” said. “Everybody says Chad will get the takedowns, and he will. It’s like Jose Aldo throwing those low kicks. Everybody knows they are doing this, but they can’t stop it. He will get the takedown, lock his hips and throw his hands. When McGregor tries to get back up, Chad will catch him.”

Mendes won’t desperately rush for takedowns, though. Coming off a devastating first-round knockout over Ricardo Lamas in April, and four knockout finishes in the UFC between his first and second bouts with Aldo, “Money” plans on standing against McGregor.

“Chad wants to trade punches with him first. His hands are good,” Prado said. “He traded punches with Jose Aldo for five rounds. One round with McGregor is not a problem.

“He will find some holes in the first round. Chad is a scary guy, he has heavy hands. McGregor will change his mind after Chad lands the first punch. Those who trained and fought him know that. Ricardo Lamas, Clay Guida and others with a good chin went down. Aldo is the only one who didn’t go down, but Aldo is Aldo. This trash talker will feel Chad’s hands and ask himself ‘what the f–k is this? This little guy has got some power’. He hits hard, man.”

Calling for a second-round finish, Prado doesn’t rule out a submission like Donald Cerrone’s victory over Edson Barboza at UFC on FOX 11.

“McGregor has a long neck, long arms to catch. I think he might submit him like ‘Cowboy’ with Barboza,” he said. “Chad will rock him, and then tap him. McGregor will get desperate after he eats some punches and will make a mistake.”

Aldo criticized the UFC for creating an interim belt after he pulled out with an injury, but Team Alpha Male won’t be thinking about the title when they enter the Octagon at UFC 189.

“We want to win so we can fight Jose Aldo again,” Prado said. “Aldo is Aldo. He’s the number one. We want to be the number one, so we have to get past this. We don’t turn down fights. We don’t care about an interim title. We’re thinking about the court jester.”
