Conor McGregor was detained by French police in Corsica last year.
According to TMZ former UFC lightweight and featherweight champion Conor McGregor will not be charged over an alleged incident that occurred on the French island of Corsica last September.
McGregor, who was staying in a yacht off the city of Bastia for a portion of last year, had been accused by a woman of “attempted sexual assault and sexual exhibition” in a bar restroom.
After a complaint was made, McGregor was detained and questioned by police before being released without charge. Police also searched the yacht McGregor was staying on. McGregor denied any wrongdoing.
McGregor’s representative released a short statement to TMZ, telling that outlet that, “They [French authorities] did a criminal investigation. They collected DNA and the DNA evidence confirmed McGregor’s account.”
TMZ also acquired a letter sent to McGregor by French authorities revealing he will not be charged over the accusations. According to TMZ that letter reads:
“The examination of the present proceedings does not justify any criminal prosecution since:
— The facts or the circumstances of the facts of the proceedings could not have been clearly established by the investigations.
— The pieces of evidence are therefore not sufficient for the offense to be constituted and for criminal prosecution to be engaged.”
This is not the first time McGregor has been investigated over a sexual assault and then not been charged with any crime. In March 2019 The New York Times reported that McGregor was under investigation for a sexual assault that was suspected to have taken place at the Beacon Hotel in Dublin in December 2018. In October 2019 NYT reported that McGregor was the subject of a second sexual assault investigation.
Earlier this year prosecutors declined to fill charges against McGregor in regards to the first accusation against him. Shortly after this, McGregor’s accuser launched a civil lawsuit against him. McGregor has denied all the claims made in that lawsuit.
In 2019 McGregor plead guilty to assault in relation to an incident that took place at The Marble Arch Pub in Dublin. At that pub McGregor was captured on camera striking an older man after he seemingly refused a free drink of McGregor’s Proper Twelve whiskey brand.
In 2018 McGregor plead no contest to charges of disorderly conduct in relation to his dolly throwing incident at the UFC 223 media day. That year McGregor was also fined and banned from driving for six months over speeding offences in Ireland.
McGregor is currently scheduled to face Dustin Poirier in the main event of UFC 264 on July 10.
