Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, after years of rumors and speculation, finally admitted to hiding from drug testers earlier in his career by diving under the practice cage at Jackson-Winkeljohn MMA.
But if you think Jones was camped out for hours simply to avoid testing positive for marijuana then you might be “as dumb as him.” That’s according to longtime rival Daniel Cormier, who believes “Bones” is once again stretching the truth to fit his narrative.
“The reality is, if it’s true, and with Jones’s history, if you believe that it was for marijuana you’re as stupid as him,” Cormier said during a recent media day (transcribed by Middle Easy). “You’re as dumb as him because come on, that’s the dumbest excuse. I’m sorry Jones, I’m not buying it. You were cheating man. You were cheating just like all those other times and you got scared. He hid underneath the Octagon, but boy you’ve got to have a criminal mindset to know that’s the place they’re not going to look.”
Jones made the revelation in response to a tweet posted by middleweight rival Israel Adesanya, who seems to have nothing better to do than troll the pound-for-pound great ahead of a potential super fight that is being teased for 2021.
Doesn’t sound like “DC” shares his sense of humor.
“That probably should have been rock bottom,” Cormier continued. “Honestly. Like ‘Oh I’m doing things so wrong that I’m hiding underneath the Octagon from drug testers.’ What about the rest of the people though? How do you look at everybody else? This was not done individually. So who else was involved in him doing that? You know what I’m saying? You’ve got to look at a lot of people in that gym and go wow, you’ve guys are kind of dirty a little bit.”
Cormier, who retired from MMA earlier this year, lost to Jones at UFC 182 by way of unanimous decision then got stopped in their UFC 214 rematch. Jones, however, flunked his post-fight drug test and the result was changed to a “no contest.”
