UFC interim welterweight champion Colby Covington believes MMA fans would start supporting him more if “dirt bags” Jon Jones and Tyron Woodley started to train together.
Jon Jones offered to help UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley prepare for a planned bout against Colby Covington, but “Chaos” doesn’t think that would work out in Jones and Woodley’s favor.
Covington, the UFC interim welterweight champion, said in an interview with Submission Radio that Jones and Woodley training together would make him “the good guy” in the eyes of fans.
Up until earlier this week, Covington was expected to meet Woodley later this year in a title unification bout. But because he is still recovering from an injury sustained in his June win over Rafael dos Anjos, the UFC is currently discussing possibly stripping Covington and booking Woodley vs. Darren Till instead.
Nonetheless, it is expected that Covington will fight for the undisputed belt sooner than later.
“I think that those guys are such dirt bags and such fake people that people hate Jon Jones and Tyron Woodley so much that it’s gonna make me a babyface,” Covington said. “And I’m a dickhead. I’m a bad person. I don’t give a fuck about people’s feelings. That’s my point. I’m trying to get everybody’s feelings hurt.”
The American Top Team product has a history with Jones, a former UFC light heavyweight champion and pound-for-pound great. The pair were college roommates back in their wrestling days. Since their time spent together and since becoming MMA standouts, Jones and Covington have gone back and forth on social media. From Covington accusing Jones of steroid use and Jones calling Covington “disgusting” and a “special type of liar,” it is clear that they do not like each other.
Covington finds the fact that Jones and Woodley may team up to prepare for Woodley’s eventual fight opposite Covington (should it still happen as initially planned) “hilarious.”
“They’re just gonna make me the babyface, they’re just gonna make me the good guy,” he continued. “And I’m not trying to be the good guy — I’m trying to be the dickhead. I don’t care about people’s feelings and I’m triggering people worldwide.
“So Jon Jones and Tyron Woodley are making a big mistake. And the funny this is they’re both managed by the same scumbag, the Kawa brothers. Malki Kawa, he doesn’t know what he’s doing, he doesn’t know how to do business.”
Covington, one of welterweight’s rising stars, is currently riding a six-fight winning streak. Despite the Till reports, Covington is still targeting a bout against Woodley for the upcoming New York City pay-per-view event in November.
