It takes a real dedication to the sport of mixed martial arts to enjoy what Colby Covington put forth in the cage with Robbie Lawler on Saturday night. Covington kept Lawler busy with an endless stream of ineffectual punches but pretty effective takedowns, leading the normally explosive “Ruthless” to simply react across their fight and sink to a 5 round decision loss instead of doing his own thing.
As usual, the most interesting part of the fight was Covington’s antics. Interesting in a raised eyebrow kind of way, not in an ‘I’d like to see more’ way.
“Let’s talk about the lesson we learned tonight that Robbie should have learned from his good buddy Matt Hughes,” Covington said on the mic after the win. “You stay off the tracks when the train is coming through, junior. Doesn’t matter if it’s the Trump train or the Colby train, stay out the way.”

Taking shots at former welterweight champ and UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes is pretty dark. Hughes suffered a pretty serious brain injury when his truck was hit by a train back in June of 2017. It took him months to even be able to perform basic tasks, and while his improvements have been miraculous he’ll certainly never be the same mentally or physically.
The serious nature of Hughes’ situation didn’t make Colby back down. Afterward when asked if he regretted the comment he refused to walk it back.
“Not at all, did I say something that was offensive?” Covington said. “The guy’s done some pretty crappy stuff, he’s got lawsuits against his family, against his brother, I just said the truth, I’m honest. I’m a little bit brutally honest sometimes and people can’t handle it. People are worried about words but we go in the Octagon to kill each other.”
He finished things off with that good old fall back: ”Don’t be so sensitive, snowflakes!”
While nothing has been officially confirmed, it’s expected that Covington gets the next title shot opportunity against current welterweight champ Kamaru Usman sometime later in 2019. New York City in November has been thrown around as a possibility, and already the UFC has Kamaru and Colby cutting promos on each other during the ESPN post fight show.
