Dana White addressed where title contender Tony Ferguson stands in the lightweight division after turning down an interim title fight.

UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway is slated to make the move to 155 pounds in order to fight Dustin Poirier for the interim UFC lightweight title at UFC 236.

This wasn’t the original plan for the event. Instead, Ferguson was offered to fight Holloway but he turned it down and the UFC got Poirier to step in. White spoke about it during the UFC 236 press conference on Friday, where he made it known that he’s not sure where Ferguson stands in the division when it comes to a title shot.

“I say all the time: When there’s an opportunity, take it. I don’t know where this leaves Tony. Tony didn’t want the fight. It’s the fight I wanted (with Poirier). We even tried to make the fight (with Holloway), and he didn’t want it. You can’t make anybody fight.”

“How bad do you want to be a champion? Do you want to get the next title shot? The guys that are sitting at this table today, they want it, so that’s why they’re here.”
