Conor McGregror is determined to get the Khabib Nurmagomedov rematch according to UFC President Dana White. The Irishman hasn’t fought since losing by fourth round submission to the lightweight champion at UFC 229 in October 2018. He’ll make his eagerly anticipated return to the octagon when he faces Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone at UFC 246 this weekend. If he wins, ‘Notorious’ will immediately begin preparations for UFC 249, in case the champion or Tony Ferguson once again fall out of their long-discussed bout. Speaking to TMZ Sports, White said.
“Here’s the thing: Realistically, Conor believes that Khabib vs. Tony Ferguson will not happen. We’ve tried to do this fight many, many times. Conor believes it won’t happen. Conor wanted to do this fight (with Cerrone) at 170 because he wants to turn right around and jump in and fight Khabib if that fight (with Ferguson) doesn’t happen. So again, we’ll see how this plays out. We’ll see what happens after this, and Conor is very focused on that rematch with Khabib.” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)
However, all of this talk from White is
extremely premature. Since McGregor last fought, ‘Cowboy’ has stepped in the
cage on five occasions, winning three times. Despite dropping his last two you
can be sure Cerrone will give the 31-year-old all he can handle on Saturday
night. Any talk of Khabib or Tony will have to wait until this one is done.
UFC 246 goes down this Saturday at the
T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The main card airs on pay-per-view
following prelims on ESPN and early prelims on UFC Fight Pass/ESPN+.
