Ultimate Fighting Championship president Dana White is set to undergo surgery to his left inner ear this morning at the Los Angeles House Clinic in California.
White suffers from Ménière’s disease which is a disorder of the inner ear effecting hearing and balance (vertigo, tinnitus or ring, and fluctuating hearing loss).
Currently there is no cure and the surgery White is set to undergo does not offer a 100% cure, just a 70% chance of reducing the number of attacks he’ll suffer.
White posted this notice on Twitter (@danawhite) late last night.
– Taking off to LA for the surgery right now. I have it at 830am, PUMPED!!! Thank u all so much for the well wishes. Much appreciated
The UFC pres also spoke to MMAjunkie.com about the surgery, telling them that the operation involves having his ear cut off so the doctor can insert a tube inside his ear.
Pretty crazy if you ask me!
“They’re going to cut my ear off,” White told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). “My left ear, they’re going to cut it off so they can get inside. They’re going to insert a tube, and this surgery is pretty new – within the last year, I think, this surgery has come out. They have to get inside there to insert a tube, so they have to go in there and go through the hole. They insert a tube, and then they reattach the ear.
“There were only two options before. There was medicine, which gave you a 50-50 chance of never having an attack. Then there was cutting the nerve, which is a very serious surgery. That’s only 95% if they cut the nerve. Nothing is 100% for this thing.”
White plans on staying overnight in Las Angeles and hopes to travel to Brazil for this weekends UFC on FX: Belfort vs. Bisping event.
