The Twitter war between Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov has reached quite the disgusting level. It’s time Dana White issues a statement on the escalating situation as a result.
McGregor incited the entire ordeal when he insulted Khabib’s wife in a since-deleted tweet last night:
The tweet understandably earned a heated response from Khabib’s team. Ali Abdelaziz was the first to respond. Khabib soon followed suit with his own response calling McGregor a rapist due to his ongoing sexual assault investigation in Dublin.
It’s all grown incredibly personal with both sides taking shots at the most personal aspects of one another’s lives. Needless to say, it’s not exactly the best look for the UFC, and Dana White knows it. He issued a statement on the ongoing rivalry via Yahoo’s Kevin Iole:
“I am aware of the recent social media exchange between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor. The ongoing situation has escalated to a level that is unacceptable. As such, we are taking the necessary steps to react out to both athlete camps and this situation is being addressed by all parties internally.”
Decent damage control from White. But we’ve heard it all before. He called McGregor’s infamous Brooklyn bus attack last April ‘the most disgusting thing he had ever seen.’ The footage of that attack was then used to promote McGregor and Khabib’s fight at UFC 229 last October. The event went on to become the highest-selling UFC pay-per-view in history.
So the UFC may claim these personal, family-based attacks are ‘unacceptable,’ but they’ll undoubtedly accept the rewards. For that reason, we could be seeing Khabib vs. McGregor II later this year.
