Kelvin Gastelum and John Lineker, both of whom badly missed weight for their UFC 183 fights against Tyron Woodley and Ian McCall, respectively, will have to move up in weight for their next fights.
Lineker has missed weight four times in eight UFC appearances, while the 23-year old Gastelum has failed to make twice in six UFC fights. Following the weigh-ins Friday in Las Vegas, UFC president Dana White told Combate that both fighters have no option but move up.
“Lineker will never fight at flyweight again. He will have to move up to bantamweight,” White said. “Same thing with Kelvin Gastelum. This was the last time he will fight at welterweight. He has weight issues, had to go to the hospital and was cleared by the doctors to come to the weigh-ins. He came here 10 pounds over. He will have to move up to middleweight.”
Lineker signed with the UFC in 2012 after racking up a 19-5 record as a bantamweight in Brazil, but decided to cut down to 125 pounds to compete inside the Octagon. He has hovered in contention for a title shot but the persistent weight troubles have worked to his detriment.
Gastelum, winner of the 17th season of The Ultimate Fighter as a middleweight, won four in a row in the UFC after dropping to 170 pounds.
