Dana White: Mayweather vs. McGregor did 6.7 million PPV buys

Dana White has offered up a new buyrate for the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Conor McGregor PPV, and it’s the highest one yet.

There has been a lot of speculation about the exact pay-per-view buyrate for the boxing megafight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor back in August. It was expected that the event would break the PPV buy record at the time, which stood at approximately 4.6 million buys for Floyd’s fight with Manny Pacquiao in 2015.

Well, there appear to be differing views on exactly what that number is. Showtime’s Stephen Espinoza has pegged it at around 4.5 million. That’s for North America only. UFC president Dana White then came out and said that the worldwide total was 6.5 million two weeks after the fight.

Now, he told WSJ’s Jason Gay on The Unnamed Podvideocast that it did more than that:

“The thing ended up doing 6.7 million pay-per-view buys globally. How about this, we broke the record in Australia, we broke the record in the UK at four in the morning. We broke the record in Spain, Canada and the United States.”

The countries listed are suspiciously similar to the ones Espinoza named back in September (except for Canada). White also admitted that the fight, which suffered from a lot of streaming issues and led to a lot of fans have to find less-than-legal means to watch, likely set records for piracy as well:

“We broke that record, too, the most pirated fight of all time. Social media, the highest betting fight ever in the history of Las Vegas.”

Mayweather defeated McGregor by TKO in the 10th round of their bout. It has been speculated that Mayweather will make over 300 million for the bout, while McGregor will bag over 100 million.
