Daniel Cormier was scheduled to defend his light heavyweight title against Jon Jones in the main event of UFC 197. However, “DC” pulled out of the fight due to a lower left leg injury that he suffered while training on March 25.

UFC President Dana White announced on SportsCenter on Saturday that Ovince St. Preux will fight Jones in the main event of UFC 197. White explained that this fight will serve as the main event and will be for the interim light heavyweight title.

There’s a reason that there will be an interim title created because Cormier is going to be out of action for a bit.

Dave Meltzer of MMA Fighting.com is reporting that Cormier is expected to be able to fight again around August or September. It should be noted that Cormier will not require surgery to fix his leg and his healing time is four to eight weeks.

UFC 197 takes place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Saturday, April 23rd, 2016. The main card will air on pay-per-view while the prelims will air on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.

One would think that once Cormier is cleared to fight and if Jones is the interim champion, then the UFC would make the fight happen later this year. Time will tell regarding their decision.
