Daniel Cormier tried to throw away his UFC titles after losing to Jon Jones

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier, like most division titleholders, gets a new championship strap for each title defense, which means “DC” has a basement full of hardware on display.

With the exception of his UFC titles.

That’s because the Olympian was so distraught in the wake of his UFC 214 loss to Jon Jones, which came by way of third-round knockout in Anaheim, Calif., that he actually tried to give them the heave-ho during an emotional fit.

From his conversation on The MMA Hour:

“I had a fight party last week to watch Luke and ‘Canelo’ fights and I have this movie room in my house. I have a whole bunch of pictures and fight stuff and memories and stuff of my fights and all my championships. And when everyone came over, they saw my Strikeforce title, and King of the Cage, and XMMA and they were like ‘hey, where are your UFC championships?’ I still haven’t put those back up. I tried to throw them away but my wife wouldn’t let me. So I just put them away in my closet. I’m still not at the point now where I can take all these belts out and face them every day.”

Cormier was unable to defeat Jones in two separate attempts.

That said, he was still able to keep his crown after “Bones” flunked a pre-fight drug test back in July, which could send the embattled pound-for-pound great into a four-year suspension from United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA).

The show must go on.

Cormier will be expected to defend the light heavyweight title later this year, or perhaps first quarter 2018, though it’s not yet known who will be the division No. 1 contender with Jones in exile.

Perhaps it’s time to make these two fight to find out?
