Dillon Danis has been punished by the Nevada Athletic Commission following the UFC 229 post-fight brawl.
Dillon Danis the latest (and presumably last) person to be sanctioned for his actions in the UFC 229 post-fight brawl.
The jiu-jitsu standout, teammate of Conor McGregor, and Bellator MMA fighter was suspended seven months and fined $7,500 by the Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC) at Monday’s hearing. Danis’ ban is retroactive to the night of UFC 229, meaning he’s eligible to return to competition after May 6th, 2019.
It was after Khabib Nurmagomedov’s win over Conor McGregor that the UFC lightweight champion leapt out of the cage to confront Danis, sparking a post-fight melee that spilled back into the Octagon. Interestingly enough, Khabib recently revealed that Danis didn’t actually do anything to provoke him to exit the cage and try and attack him, so what was Danis’ suspension for?
Per MMA Fighting:
According to NAC officials, Danis’ suspension and fine were the result of an unsportsmanlike conduct charge, with commission representatives noting that Danis had to be physically restrained by security personnel on multiple occasions and used obscene gestures against Nurmagomedov and his team.
So in the end, Danis’ ban is only two months shorter than Khabib’s, and it’d actually be a month longer if Nurmagomedov participated in an anti-bullying PSA.
Others suspended from UFC 229 include Conor McGregor (six months), as well as Khabib’s teammates Abubakar Nurmagomedov and Zubaira Tukhugov (one year). Khabib intends to sit out until his teammates’ suspensions have been fulfilled.
As for Danis, who was in McGregor’s corner on that unforgettable night, he’ll presumably look to resume his Bellator career once his ban is over. He made his MMA debut last year, submitting Kyle Walker back in April.
