Oscar De La Hoya vs a UFC fighter?
After months of teasing a comeback, Oscar De La Hoya just announced that he will officially be coming out of retirement to fight on July 3.
Details are starting to come in, with ESPN reporting that it wouldn’t just be a one-off fight, as De La Hoya has signed a multi-fight deal with Triller. The July 3 event will happen in Texas, with the promotion’s CEO, Ryan Kavanaugh stating that it could happen at the AT&T Stadium. That’s the same venue where Canelo Alvarez vs Billy Joe Saunders is set to face off in April, with 80% capacity still amounting to 60,000 fans in attendance.
As for De La Hoya’s opponent, he has previously asked for a rematch with Floyd Mayweather and an “easy” bout with Gennadiy Golovkin, but Kavanaugh told ESPN that they’re targeting a “big” UFC name instead.
This type of matchmaking is on brand for Triller, who not only hosted boxing legends coming back, but also crossover matches involving UFC stars, like their next offering in Jake Paul vs Ben Askren.
De La Hoya, a decorated six-division boxing champ turned promoter, hasn’t fought since his TKO loss to Manny Pacquiao over 12 years ago. He is now 48-years-old, and also battled alcohol and substance addiction in the years after his retirement.
