Grammy award winner Drake brought up Nate Diaz during a conversation about a recent beef.

Have you ever looked at Drake and then been reminded of Nate Diaz? Me neither. But the acclaimed musician from ‘the 6ix’ apparently sees some similarities between himself and the needle-moving pride of Stockton.

In a recent interview Drake discussed a 2018 beef he had with rapper Pusha T. That beef, which saw dueling diss tracks released by both artists, made headlines when Pusha T rapped about the existence of Drake’s secret love child.

With a track called The Story of Adidon, Pusha T also revealed images of Drake in black face and rhymed about a close friend of Drake who suffers from multiple sclerosis. The rap-community was united in calling the diss track brutal and awarding Pusha T the victory.

In a two-hour interview with Rap Radar Drake fully accepted the loss. However, in doing so, he talked himself up as a fighter who is still a threat despite having an L on his record. When defining himself as a scrappy pugilist he invoked the name Diaz.

Here’s the full quote, via MMA Nytt:

“This is a sport at the end of the day, and you know from a very early point, I’ve never shied away from defending myself,” Drake said. “And I’m also sometimes eager to engage if I feel that you want to be slick or be offensive behind the scenes. I might choose to address it in music.

“And, you know, that was how I ended myself up in the Pusha [T] situation, which, you know… some of my favourite fighters in the world, take a guy like Nate Diaz,” Drake added. “You look at his record. It might not look like the craziest record, but you know, he’s still one of my favourite fighters, he’s still a dog.

“That’s just the sport of fighting. Somebody’s gonna catch you at some point unless you’re Floyd [Mayweather] pretty much. But for the rest of us, you’re gonna get rocked one time by something you didn’t expect. So that’s just kinda how I chalk that situation up.”

Like Drake, Diaz took a loss in his most recent battle. His was a TKO loss to Jorge Masvidal for the novelty BMF belt at UFC 244 in November. Prior to that bout Diaz beat Anthony Pettis at UFC 241 in August. The Pettis fight was Diaz’s first contest since losing a rematch to Conor McGregor back in 2016.
