RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil — Fresh off another quick finish in the UFC, Erick Silva wants to tap Ben Saunders at UFC Fight Night 62.
Set to take on the American Top Team fighter on March 21 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Silva looks to finally start his first win streak inside the Octagon after bouncing back between wins and losses in his past nine UFC bouts.
“Saunders is a big guy and that’s good, because the bigger he is, the harder he falls,” Silva said of the upcoming bout during a media day in Rio de Janeiro. “My strategy is going to be the same from my last fight. I will take him down and submit him. He has long legs and I will twist it. It’s going to be a good and quick fight.”
Silva, 5-4 in the UFC, changed a few things in his career following a devastating loss to Matt Brown in his first UFC main event, and wants to use his aggressiveness in the right moment. In his last appearance inside the Octagon, the Brazilian welterweight put Mike Rhodes to sleep in 75 seconds.
“I’m training more, I’m more focused. This change of focus is great for me. That’s part of me wanting it more,” he said. “I will try to be aggressive like a tiger, but also be patient to wait for the right moment to attack.”
Silva sees his losses to Brown, Jon Fitch and Dong Hyun Kim as a learning experience.
“I had a lot of tests, they put me against great athletes, and those tests were important for me,” Silva said. “I fought guys well ranked, I did good fights, and I had six bonuses. Win or lose, I do great fights. And I had moments in those fights that I almost won.”
Silva wants to beat Saunders and be ranked among the best 15 fighters at 170 pounds. In fact, “Indio” thinks he should already be up there.
“I’m in a position in the rankings that I shouldn’t be, and that makes me hungrier for this fight. As soon as I beat my next opponent, I will continue to climb (the rankings), step by step,” he said. “I want to be among the best welterweights in the world, that’s where I should be. I fixed the details that lacked in those fights (I lost). I’m doing my part. What I’m worried about now is submitting Ben Saunders on March 21.”
