A UFC light heavyweight title between defending champion Jon ‘Bones’ Jones (16-1) and current No.1 contender Dan Henderson (29-8) will likely go down in early September, possibly Labor Day weekend.
The UFC does not currently have an event slotted for that weekend but UFC president Dana White noted during Thursday’s pre-fight press conference for UFC on FOX 3, that they were targeting the long weekend for Jones next title fight.
Jones recently defended his title last month at UFC 145 by defeating Rashad Evans via unanimous decision at the Atlanta, Georgia event. The win made it three straight title defenses for ‘Bones’ who stopped Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua for the strap a year ago at UFC 128.
Henderson earned his way into the No. 1 contender spot by defeating ‘Shogun’ also. The two former PRIDE champions fought last November in the 2011 Fight of the Year, by going five-rounds in a non-title bout for the No.1 contender position. That win was Henderson’s first bout in the UFC after returning from Strikeforce where he won that promotion’s 205-lbs title.
