Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) interim lightweight titleholder Tony Ferguson, who was stripped of the substitute strap after blowing out his knee, appears to have been cleared for a return to mixed martial arts (MMA).
“El Cucuy” was expected to once against compete for the interim strap against Dustin Poirier at UFC 236 just last month; however, since-resolved domestic issues and concerns about his psychological well being sent him (temporarily) to the sidelines.
But every setback opens the door for a comeback.

Ferguson (24-3) is currently ranked No. 2 at 155 pounds, behind Dustin Poirier. Assuming he’s able to get back to work later this year, “El Cucuy” is widely expected to face the winner of Poirier vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov, who will unify the division titles at UFC 242 this September in Abu Dhabi.
Unless Ferguson can secure a three-piece “McNuggets.”
