Marvin Vettori set a record for takedowns in a UFC middleweight fight in defeating Kevin Holland

Marvin Vetorri scored 11 total takedowns in his first nine fights under the UFC banner. On Saturday, Vettori doubled that number on his way to a one-sided victory over Kevin Holland in the main event of UFC Vegas 23. Vettori’s 11 successful takedowns in a single 185-pound UFC contest set a new UFC record. Before UFC Vegas 23 the record of 10 successful takedowns at middleweight was shared by Aaron Simpson and Bartosz Fabinski. Simpson put Mario Miranda on the mat 10 times in 2011 and Fabinski planted Garreth McLellan on 10 occasions during their 2015 scrap. Vettori landed his 11 takedowns on 17 shots. He ended the 25-minute headlining fight with 20:01 of control time.

Vettori was initially booked opposite Darren Till on Saturday’s fight card, but a collarbone injury forced Till from the event. Holland stepped in on short notice to replace Till. Holland entered UFC Vegas 23 coming off a loss to Derek Brunson. Brunson scored six takedowns on 12 attempts in that bout. Brunson had nearly 17 minutes of control time.

After the win, Vettori called for a matchup against UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya.

“I want Adesanya next. October, I want to fight him. I think I deserve it. I have the longest win streak right now. I put on winning performances. Dominant performances. I want this title.”

Vettori has won five straight fights. His most recent loss was an April 2018 split-decision setback to Adesanya.

UFC Vegas 23 took place at UFC Apex in Las Vegas. ABC broadcast the main card following prelims on ESPN and ESPN+.
