Floyd Mayweather thinks Conor McGregor is still doing a lot of “illegal” things in sparring, even after hiring Joe Cortez.
Floyd Mayweather, who says he has done his “due diligence” and knows a lot of information about Conor McGregor’s camp, thinks the UFC fighter is doing a lot of illegal things in sparring as he prepares for their boxing match. According to the undefeated boxer, a lot of rules were broken during McGregor’s session with Paulie Malignaggi.
“It was real interesting,” Mayweather said about McGregor’s sparring clips on a recent conference call. “A lot of rabbit punching, illegal rabbit punching behind the head, a lot of shots that were illegal, a lot of grappling, a lot of wrestling, a lot of illegal shots. That’s just my honest opinion.
The referee has recently been named for the contest, and Mayweather has stated that he is fine with the selection.
“He had Joe Cortez in his training camp, which is a great thing,” he said. “Even though he had Joe Cortez in his training camp, I still see him being extremely dirty. But my job is not to worry about the referee, my job is to go out there and fight and let the referee do his job.
“I truly believe the ref is going to do his job. The referee’s job is to make sure the fighters — that he’s keeping it clean,” he said. “I’m coming straight ahead, so he don’t have nothing to worry about. I look forward to following the Queensbury rules of boxing and I’m sure he’s looking forward to following the Queensbury rules of boxing.”
Only about 24 seconds has been released to the public, so it is quite hard to see where Mayweather saw “a lot” of grappling and wrestling in exactly one short clinch position that was immediately broken up. But Mayweather saying how he’s sure that the “referee will do his job” and repeating it multiple times, could also be his way to preempt things and let Robert Byrd know how he wants to be officiated.
