Verbal agreements are in place pitting Joseph Benavidez (16-3) and Ian ‘Uncle Creepy McCall (11-3-1) against one another for the upcoming Super Bowl weekend UFC 156: Aldo vs. Edgar event.
No official announcement has been made by the promotion but MMAWeekly.com has confirmed the news with sources close to the bout.
UFC 156: Aldo vs. Edgar is expected to take place on February 2, 2013 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The match will certainly appear on the pay-per-view main card.
Both Benavidez and McCall were part of the UFC’s four-man flyweight tournament to crown the first 125-lbs champion.
Benavidez made it into the final only to wind up losing a split decision to Demetrious Johnson last September at UFC 152. The loss ended a four fight win streak for Benavidez who earned his last win in March of this year by stopping Yasuhiro Urushitani at UFC on FX 2 via second round TKO.
McCall’s last bout was also a loss to Johnson in June at UFC on FX 3, in their back-to-back rematch following their majority draw at UFC on FX 2 in March. Those were the only appearances by McCall in the Octagon after signing with the UFC after winning the Tachi Palace Fight flyweight title.
