UFC middleweight Mark Munoz is in a difficult predicament in his mixed martial arts career. The 36 year-old fighter has had a successful run in the UFC, but after losing to Gegard Mousasi in the main event at UFC Fight Night 41 on Saturday in Berlin, Germany, where he goes from here isn’t entirely clear.
Munoz was game early in the bout, attempting and scoring on takedowns – some of them high amplitude – but it wouldn’t last for long. As Munoz attempted a body lock takedown, he was reversed in the attempt, which put the Armenian Mousasi directly in mount.
From there the former Strikeforce champion pounded on Munoz, eventually scoring a rear naked choke submission win at just 3:57 of the very first round.
The loss marks Munoz’s third in his last four fights. Saturday’s defeat is the first time Munoz has tasted defeat in back-to-back contests in MMA.
Still, ‘The Filipino Wrecking Machine’ vowed at the post-fight press conference to move forward in his career.
“It was a tough loss,” Munoz said of the loss to Mousasi, “but I think it doesn’t matter how many times you fall, but it’s how many times you pick yourself back up there after a loss or a failure.
“And that’s what I’ll do.”
